Thanks for the post. This is the first after-action report I've ever seen about a modern battle with Gurka troops.
They are something else.
Kewl post. No, make that awesome. I am so intrigued by these guys....
"OPERATION VIJAY happened in Kargil, while I was busy combating militants elsewhere in the same state. This was somewhere in the first week of May 2001. By the time the actual fighting developed, it was almost the end of May and by now people had realised that the Pak army was fully involved and it wasn't just some militants."
There are a slew of great Indian (Bollywood) flicks about this battle. "Lakshya" comes to mind as pretty good.
I love that one....they are fierce. The British didn't realize how fierce until they used them.
There was a Gurkha Captain in my Officer Advanced Course about 10 years ago (he was actually promoted to MAJ during the course). That tradition was still firmly in place at that time, and I see no reason it would have gone away in the interim.
These are some tough SOBs.
Why are/were they in Kashmir? I thought that was Pak/Islamist mercenaries v. India. Does the Indian Army have units of Ghurkas as well? Great pictures.
it's called Ghurkali
Many of the Maoists ARE Gurkhas -- they have no way to improve themselves in their own country so have to become mercenaries for the Brits or Indians.
Umm,the Indian military (& paramilitary forces) have more Gurkhas than the British or even the Royal Nepal Army. They serve pretty much whereever the IA sends them & do a terrific job.Quiet a few join paramilitary forces like the CISF & BSF(border security force),while some take up lucrative positions in private security firms.
I could be mistaken, but I recall hearing that the first contact the Brits had with the Gurkhas was less than friendly. The British, ever practical, decided that it would be very good to have them on their side because they certainly didn't want to experience the opposite. Curiously, by the end of the 18th century they had decided the same thing about the Scots.

Supermodel hires Gurkha guards
By A Staff Reporter,
KATHMANDU, Jan. 2: Suddenly, the celebrities are turning to Gurkhas for their safety. According to Daily Mirror, a British newspaper, supermodel Claudia Schiffer and her British film director husband Matthew Vaughn have hired five former British Gurkhas to help run and protect their £5million Suffolk mansion.
The couple has sparked a celebrity craze for hiring the former British Gurkhas. They have even been urging their friends to hire them.
The paper said the Gurkhas Matthew and Claudia have hired are experts in close protection.
The paper also said that the Layer Cake director and his German supermodel missus are great supporters of the Nepalese fighters. Claudia gave birth last month to their second child, a daughter named Clementine. They also have a two-year-old son, Caspar.
Its understandable that Matthew, 33, and Claudia, 34, want to have ex-Gurkhas around them after being targeted by two stalkers this year. They (the Gurkhas) are renowned for being some of the toughest and bravest men on earth, the newspaper said.
The men they have hired have specific domestic and organisational tasks like gardening duties and driving, but their ferociousness should not be overlooked. They are very professional and incredibly discreet.
Matthew was quoted as saying that the Gurkhas were among the most hardworking, loyal and skilled people he had ever come across. We are delighted to give them jobs.
Vaughns best friend Lock, Stock director Guy Ritchie and his wife Madonna are so impressed after seeing their Gurkhas, they want to employ some too.
This is great opportunity for those ex-Gurkhas to make a name in the high profile section of security protecting the celebrities.
A recent change in the British law has allowed the ex-Gurkhas, who served for four years or more and retired after 1997, to live in Britain after retirement.
After proving their mettle in the deserts of North Africa to the jungle of Burma, Gurkhas might be making in-roads to the high-flying life of London, Paris, New York and Hollywood escorting models, actors and actresses, and even Posh and Beck.
We get parachutes?!
Well didnt you know, India has the largest Gurkha unit any where in the world.
