No, of course not.
I was referring specifically to your statement that Job thought of his seven sons and three daughters as property, nothing more.
I would remind you that Job lost his oxen, his asses, his servants and his camels, but only when he lost his sons and daughters did he "rent his mantle and shaved his head".
This is an indication to me that he thought of his children as more than property.
By "we", I meant America. Again, we cannot solve the world's problems, but we should never excuse them, either.
Exactly!
Thank you.
Just who are you talking to! I haven't even been following this thread. Take me off of your ping list.
"In your eyes its better if she starve or eventually raped and killed [than being forced into a polygamous marriage before she is even a teenager]. "
In my eyes, neither is desirable. Both are detestable.
You might as well come out and say that because you have some money it is OK for you to use a little girl like this for your personal sexual gratification because it would be better than what she has now.
That is no justification at all. It is self-condemnation. God gave you what you have, and you will be held accountable for how you use it.
A man should love the one he marries and do what is her best interest. This does not describe what is happening in this situation.
BUMP
Add the US? How do you figure?
You haven't solved the problem, you've just made another family poor.
There are no easy solutions in a situation like this. We Americans are used to living in a society where no matter how bad things get, we don't have to worry about feeding our families (I mean really worry about it. No matter how poor you are, there are always food banks, churches etc. that will help you out). That is not the case in a place like Afghanistan.
Is selling your daughter to another man a good solution? No. However, it seems like in this situation, there were no good solutions.
With his land gone, how would this guy feed the rest of his family? He is an illiterate subsistence farmer. Without land to till, he has no other way of making a living.
You have got to be kidding. This is a preadolescent girl. You're talking institutionalized *perversion* here.
So what is wrong with making another crime family poor? He should have thought of that before making a loan to a poppy grower.
Hard choices, yes. Death or youth marriage. At least in exchange for marriage the girl gets life time care.
I'm certainly not saying that the money-lender is a saint, but all he did was loan money to a farmer engaged in growing a crop that is pretty common in Afghanistan. Heck, he wasn't even growing poppies himself, the guy selling his daughter was. Should the Marines put a bullet into him for engaging in business that is perfectly acceptable by local standards?
You're proposing getting the US involved in selectively killing various members of Afghani society for engaging in business behavior we don't really approve of. The Marines are not a good tool of social engineering.
Yes, as long as it lasts. Let's see ... death by starvation, or death in childbirth, because an undernourished twelve year old's hips are probably no way wide enough for the birthing process. Nice choice.
