Like many other farmers in Afghanistan, Gul Miran had planned to pay back the loan with the proceeds from his crop of poppies, which would eventually be turned into heroin. But as part of its stepped-up effort to combat the drug trade in the country, the government had ploughed under his fields, and Gul Miran was left with nothing.
"I accepted the girl in return for my loan," said Haji Naqibullah, who had advanced Gul Miran the money. "We had an agreement. He would (pay me back) regardless of whether his crops were wiped out by the weather or by the government.
"In a year or 18 months I will marry her off to my youngest son," he said. "He is 19 years old and has been married to his first wife for two years but has not had a child yet."

It would be when your other kids, and this one, starved to death or ended up in 'slavery' anyhow after you went to prison. This isn't exactly suburban Long Island we're talking about here..

Arranged marriages may not be all that bad. This poor man is relieved of his debt and his obligation to provide for his daughter while the daughter is guaranteed room and board. Not a bad deal for all. Somewhat of a win win.

Arranged marriage? This girl will be 12 years old max when she is married off to a then 21 year old. That is not marriage it's child molestation. You think that is win win? Not a bad deal? Does the idea of slavery bother you?

If she is physically mature enough to be impregnated, she is at high risk for dying in childbirth or having a still born. Her body most probably cannot handle carrying a baby to term.
How old was Mohammed's last wife? Nine when married, twelve when the marriage was consummated?
Why do you assume marriage means sex ? I know other cultures use and have used marriage as a means of supporting many women. I don't want to use our culture to judge another without full knowledge of what their culture is actually doing.
As opposed to starving to death ? Yes. When given a choice between death and child marriage I would choose marriage for my daughter. At least she would be cared for by her new husband and her future children. Her other option is to beg on the streets and possibly be raped and then get a death sentence for having sex outside of marriage ?
