"If a father tried to get help for his daughter he would be arrested for opium trading.'' Would that be so much worse than selling your daughter? I wonder.

I can see New York Times Headline. "US Goverment interference in Afghanistan calling for destruction of crops forces local farmer to sell daughter into slavery. Bush Administration to blame."

Arranged marriages may not be all that bad. This poor man is relieved of his debt and his obligation to provide for his daughter while the daughter is guaranteed room and board. Not a bad deal for all. Somewhat of a win win.

Been going on for donkey's years. With or without opium in the equation, the general disregard and disrespect for women makes it OK. Blame the culture and the RELIGION, that more or less makes it acceptable. NO regard for the life of your OWN child???? Nice religion, nice culture!

this HAS been going on for eons. In Japan and other asian countries and other countries i don't know about, females have been regarded so little that daughters are sold into prostitution at a very early age.
The lack of the judeo/christian perspective creates situations like this, i believe. whether or not you embrace a personal belief in the judeo/christian doctrines, the basis of our country creates an atmosphere where all human beings are honored, men, women, and children. we are blessed in this country.

This is sickening. Anyone who refuses to admit that our Western Judeo-Christian culture is superior to others is obviously ignorant of the facts of life in many other countries.

When my minister was living in Egypt, he was offered a thousand (yes, 1000) camels for his then-12-year-old daughter. I know that sounds like a joke, but he and his wife both swear that it's true.

Something doesn't add up with this story. The government plows the field under, presumably because they know he is growing poppies. Growing poppies is illegal? Why is he not arrested for opium trading when the field is plowed under, but is arrested if he tries to get help for his daughter? There must be more to this story.

Just get the reporter's notes. Find the holder of the loan and kill him. Debt cancelled courtesy US military. Then the destitute family can sell their 19-year-old son into some kind of servitude.
