You think that is win win? Not a bad deal? Does the idea of slavery bother you?

As opposed to starving to death ? Yes. When given a choice between death and child marriage I would choose marriage for my daughter. At least she would be cared for by her new husband and her future children. Her other option is to beg on the streets and possibly be raped and then get a death sentence for having sex outside of marriage ?

Raycpa you have a very good point. In survival mode Desperate things must be done.

These people are animals and Given that the choices are most likely what Raycpa has said it is understandable. It's human nature to always choose life. Survival.

The only one at risk of death in this situation was the idiot, poppy growing, loan defaulting father. He saved his own behind by selling his daughter.

He is despicable.

Maybe we should make slavery legal in our country then. Poor people who have credit card debt (a loan against future income like in the story) could sell their children to get rid of it. What a fantastic idea...[/s]

There is no real reason to believe that the man who bought this girl will actually marry her off to his youngest son. Maybe he will throw her in a child brothel or become her pimp. Maybe he will just use her as a household slave. There was a time in our country that both men and women believed in the concept "live free or die".

Good point. Still, why is it that it is so seldom the Muslim father man never sells himself out as a slave or blows himself up. It always has to be the children, the girls, the women who are sacrificed for the benefit of the man. Of course, this is not peculial to Islam. It is just that Islam seems to have allowed this approach to life to linger longer than some other religions and cultures that have moved on from their roots in this kind of existence and approach to life.

The story of Job comes to mind. Everything is from the viewpoint of the patriarch. His sons die, and it is all about Job, his suffering, adjusting his attitude, testing his faith. Of course, the sons don't get to have their faith tested, their attitude examined, their relationship with God examined. They are killed like two unknown security guys in the first five minutes of a Star Trek episode. They are Job's possessions rather than human protagonists in their own right-- highly valued possessions, but possessions nevertheless.

And these were sons. Daughters tend to be down there with cattle and sheep in a society with this sort of viewpoint.
