Portrayal of feminists is hurtful, stereotyped in light of their work
The INDEX - Truman State University ^ | Thursday, February 17, 2005 | Dana Kuhnline

Posted on 02/17/2005 6:09:35 AM PST by rface

"Shaving your legs makes them all itchy and bumpy, and the hair grows back the next day anyway."

In response to the recent anti-feminist column in the Feb. 10 issue of the Index that uncreatively accused feminists of being anti-science, anti-male and, in the tradition of Rush Limbaugh, ugly and hairy, I would like to point out several reasons why one might choose to be a feminist.

First of all, while I might be willing to concede that, as a woman, my pathetic visual-spatial abilities will never allow me to place in the visual-spatial Olympics, I don't understand why they make me more likely to be sexually assaulted, suffer from an eating disorder or be paid significantly less in every type of job (even the verbal ones!). I just don't see how that relates to the fact that the No. 1 cause of death for pregnant women in America is murder.

While I could nitpick at the gross stereotypes and un-facts contained within the "column," I'll instead guess at why a woman would wish to rail against people who are working for change. It is more fun to ridicule and spread lies about people who dedicate their lives to work for change than it is to think about why a person would be an activist. It is painful to realize that we live in a world full of problems. It is hard to see shades of gray instead of simple black and white, and it is uncomfortable to think about sexual assault, murder and poverty. It is funny to think about women with hairy legs.

Instead of making fun of activists, perhaps we should spend a bit more time thinking of what we can do to better our community. That is the goal of most feminists I know. As a feminist, I don't want to punish anyone, but I do want to be able to walk to the library at night and not feel afraid.

As a last note, I know many feminists with hairy legs, and most of them are men. I beg Ms. Stuart not to hate them too much for it. Shaving your legs makes them all itchy and bumpy, and the hair grows back the next day anyway.

I must admit that I am not exactly sure what the definition of "feminist" is anymore - but if all it means is that "equal pay for equal work", then I am a feminist, but I think there's a better word for it ---- but does being a "feminist" mean that you won't shave your legs?

but I do want to be able to walk to the library at night and not feel afraid.

That is why Samuel Colt created his "equalizer" and God created the CCW Permit.

people who dedicate their lives to work for change

As wide spread as this affliction may seem today, it's really possible and quite easy to overcome. We live in this paradise of freedom. Let's try not to worry so much what the rest of the 'world' is doing. Let's just try to live our lives to the best of our abilities. It works for me, it might work for others. Dale.

or be paid significantly less in every type of job

Feminist MYTH... women wind up with lifetime earnings lower then men because they take time off to raise children, not because they are paid less when they are working. This is just flat out myth and no longer true.

I do want to be able to walk to the library at night and not feel afraid.

Carry yourself a nice gun, and take some self defense courses. As a GUY I have walked down streets at late hours and felt afraid... Is it right that predators prey on victims? NO.. but please don't blame society for the criminals who do this.

Your arguments for Feminism seem dubious at best. Feminism is going to end the rapist? Or the mugger? If you walk around expecting to be the victim in life... you basically don't live life. If you think you are underpaid for your talents.. get another job.. or better yet START YOUR OWN BUSINESS. There isn't a business person alive today who's going to say sorry, can only pay you 80% of what I pay Bill even though you both contribute as much to my bottom line just because you don't have a penis... that's just patently ignorant and dishonest if you believe such tripe.

maybe feminists have problems because their agenda has resulted in the enslavement of women. prior to feminism women had the choice to be homemakers and mothers. NOW they HAVE NO CHOICE but to work...

Perhaps in her next column, the young lady could point out several reasons why one might choose to be a white supremacist. It's basically the same mindset.

Radical feminist ideals oppose modern gender equality views

By Katie Stuart
Published: Thursday, February 10, 2005

I am not a feminist. Good ... I am glad I got that out there in the open.

No, I don't have any desire to burn my bra. Lord knows I need it. I don't have hairy legs. I don't fit the picture of a 1970s feminist. No, I believe that there are fundamental biological differences between the genders.

Judge Maria Lopez testified that the prosecution never presented evidence that Charles "Ebony" Horton was a dangerous pedophile. Lopez sentenced Horton to probation after he admitted holding a screwdriver to the neck of a boy after demanding oral sex from him.

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/1805007/detail.html

We make fun of feminist because they do things like self-proclaimed feminist Judge Maria Lopez.

If the "feminists" advocated the extermination of sexual abuser of women and children it would go a long way to earn our respect. Sadly, Maria Lopez thought probation was sufficient. The NOW gang wouldn't even criticize Bill Clinton who was accused of rape by Juanita Broderick. How can we take them seriously?

"No. 1 cause of death for pregnant women in America is murder."

A couple of things:

1.) How many of these women were married to their murderer?

2.) Are these women pregnant by choice or the victims of rape? (In other words, did they intend to become pregnant)

3.) What are the judgment skills of a woman who is old enough to become pregnant (married or not) AND who voluntarily associates with a man who will harm her?

Take some responsibility for your actions and choices! I AM HEARTILY SICK OF HAVING THE CONSEQUENCES OF SOME IDIOT'S P*&S POOR JUDGEMENT SKILLS AND SUBSEQUENT CHOICES IN LIFE CAST IN MY FACE!!!!!

Essetntially every 'statistic' presented by Kuhnline has been certified as wrong when an honest attempt has been made to verify them. From the lie about getting paid less than men (corrected for the various biases including 'time out' for child raising - they actually average slightly higher average pay than men) to the canard about the murder rate of pregnant women. Unfortunately, her incorrect and ill-informed 'knowledge' reflects that of all too many women in academia (students as well as teachers)today.

Buy Ann Coulter's book "How to Talk to a Liberal." The last chapter contains a number of unpublished columns. The first is about the feminists. Please read.

As a feminist, I don't want to punish anyone, but I do want to be able to walk to the library at night and not feel afraid.

And this is really the root of all feminist thought. They are basically pi$$ed off with God for creating them with the so-called "inequalities" that they think they have to live with when dealing with men. Now since they can't "get even" with God for this inequality, the next best thing is to take their feelings of "injustice" out on all around them.

But all they really need to do is remember this:

"God did NOT make men and women equal, but Smith and Wesson DID."

You bigot! Don't you know that all problems are the result of unfairness in our society not because some squeaky wheel shirked responsibility.

Carrying a weapon means you are afraid; carrying a concealed weapon means you are very afraid.
The woman wants to be able to walk around unconcerned that some mook is going to jump her.
There are two ways to make the streets safe: Assurance on the mook's part that he will not get away with it, because fear of getting caught is the only deterrent to crime, just ask a CEO or a mugger, and teaching mooks that jumping people who are weaker or more vulnerable is wrong and we don't do it, which is basic Christianity.

"fear of getting caught is the only deterrent to crime..."

Bullcrap. There are numerous studies where inmates were interviewed. Fear of GETTING KILLED BY A CIVILLIAN was their strongest deterrent. They avoided situations where a civillian was likely to be armed.

Just to be fair, the rest of your statement is equally full of bull.
