WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a possible White House candidate in 2008, joined 2004 nominee John Kerry and other Democrats Thursday in urging that Election Day be made a federal holiday to encourage voting.
-snip-
"I think it's also necessary to make sure our elections meet the highest national standards," said the New York senator.

Kerry, who lost the national contest by 3.3 million votes nationwide, and 118,000 within Ohio, denied the bill was an attempt to discredit the 2004 results.
"This has nothing to do with me," said Kerry. "It is not partisan, or shouldn't be."
Clinton echoed those comments, though her senatorial re-election committee, Friends of Hillary, is pushing the bill hard.

In addition to creating a federal holiday for voting, the bill would:
-Require paper receipts for votes.
-Authorize $500 million to help states make the changes in voting systems and equipment.
-Allow ex-felons to vote. Currently an estimated 4.7 million Americans are barred from voting because of their criminal records.
-Require adoption of the changes in time for the 2006 election.

Boxer said the bill "is meant to ensure the election debacle of 2000, and the serious election irregularities of 2004, never ever happen again."
If that happens conservatives might never win another election

I think that's their intent.
Creating a paper trail is just asking for vote fraud.
How about starting with the Military Vote, Senator? Did I miss that in your list of prospective LIBERAL voters you want to re-enfranchise and purchase votes from?
This bill got no chance.
They better be careful what they wish for. This may very well increase the amount of Republican voters far more than Democrats.
If it's a holiday, everyone will be on vacation and no one will vote.
If it's a holiday, everyone will be on vacation and no one will vote.
Now, let's see if I get this picture: if its a work day then liberals get to take time off from work to go vote. If it's a holiday, then they can sleep in, head for the beach, a movie ..... h-m-m-m......which do you think would appeal to liberals? Some time off from working, or time to get away from it all. Somehow, I don't picture a 'holiday' helping the liberals.
I could imagine a bar-coded receipt (like the digitized representation of my finger print on my GA driver's license) that could be read by secure equipment and decoded to perform an audit of the vote tabulation by sampling a small percentage of receipts.
But a simple English receipt of vote choices would be a) easy to simulate and b) lead to intimidation of voters.
Allow ex-felons to vote? How do you become an EX-felon?............
The long and short of this article, particularly in Hillary's case, is she believes she's entitled to the Presidency, even if she has to go so low as to steal it.
ask the Dems
"If it's a holiday, everyone will be on vacation and no one will vote."
Bull, if this bill passes federal employees will get another free day off at the expense of the private sector. As far as I can tell by my contact with government employees, they have 70% of every day off.
Citizens do not need a whole day off to vote. But fraudulent voters need the whole day off to vote repeatedly. Voting five, six or ten times can be quite time consuming I'm sure.
The only thing I think I agree with is a paper trail.
What's missing is verifiable ID and proof of citizenship.
"Both parties have called for changes to ensure a more accurate vote count. Republican efforts have centered on reducing voter fraud, while Democrats have called for making access to the ballot box easier and simpler."The GOP wants less fraud; the democrats want easier access for ex-felons.
The best way is to get pardoned by Bill Clinton.
