Judaism considers it the holiest place on earth. Muslims say it's the third holiest. Christianity reveres the spot as being of great historic importance. But if someone prays there, if he or she is not Muslim, the worshiper will be immediately arrested. Welcome to the Temple Mount.
The Temple Mount is the large area directly behind the Western Wall in Jerusalem. It is the site of Judaism's first and second Temples, the primary area of worship for the Jewish faith and the location in which Gods "shekhina," or presence, is thought by Jews to reside. The area is about the size of 15 football stadiums.

I agree. After the Six-Day War, Israel turned over control of the mosque to the Wafq in an effort to show religious freedom to those who had not shown it to the Jews during the Jordanian occupation. IMO,Israeli good intentions, combined with the Intifada/Oslo are being rewarded in typical Islamic
fashion.
The Ottomans should have written up regulations for the use of the Temple Mount. I'm sure they did not include arresting people for praying. All they have to do is look into old documents and apply what was done there. Its worked for the Church of Nativity, it should work for everything else if you consider that the Ottomans only needed less a platoon of soldiers to keep the peace in Jerusalem in the good old days.
I don't know about that but as a Muslim I see nothing wrong with people of other religions praying in Muslim holy sites including Mecca and Medina or whereever else they please. Besides, i this case, the Temple Mount was holy for Judaism way before ISlam even existed so nobody should have the right to deny the Jews their right to pray there.

I guess I should have said "..in typical Islamic fashion - as Islam is interpreted by Palestinian Arabs for their political goals". As a historian, and someone who has studied the region for decades, I've come to the conclusion that the only time Jerusalem comes to the forefront in Islam, is when Arab politics want it at the forefront. There is, IMO, strong evidence that the idea that Al-Masujidi-al-Aqtza is the Aska/Omar Mosque had more to do with political and military desires, than anything mandated by theology.

They have a long history of destroying other religion's Holy places and "discovering" they are "really" muslim holy places.
As far as muslims "let[ting]" Jews "have" Jerusalem...that notion is so absurd and revolting I think I'm gonna puke.
The Jews and Israel are #1 on the muslim hit list. Have a look at the PLO/PA charter or at the graffiti in "palestine" - "First the Saturday People, then the Sunday People."
The secret stealth retaliatory action against radical Islamic violence is to BOMB Mecca and Medina. This would be logistically relatively EASY as they are militarily unprotected and have very small permanent populations. If that happens, then the Mount becomes #1. This is a GOOD reason for their attitude.
