Illegal Immigrant License Ban Falls Short
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 2/19/2005 | Michael Gardner

Posted on 02/19/2005 7:03:47 AM PST by kellynla

SACRAMENTO – Ignored by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and short on cash, a grass-roots Republican group yesterday abandoned an initiative campaign to bar illegal immigrants from obtaining driver licenses and other public benefits.

The broader debate over illegal immigration, however, is certain to continue to play out in Washington, where President Bush is pushing new federal policies, and in California, where Schwarzenegger is tangling with Latino activists over driver licenses.

With a Tuesday deadline looming, campaign leaders counting signatures realized they were as many as 150,000 short of the number needed to qualify the measure for the ballot. The daunting challenge forced them to concede.

Mike Spence, leader of the effort, blamed the setback on an inability to attract donations to cover the cost of paying signature gatherers.

"We didn't have enough money," he said.

Spence and others were hoping for backing from Rep. Darrell Issa, a wealthy Vista Republican, that never materialized. Issa, who bankrolled much of the signature gathering to qualify the recall of then-Gov. Gray Davis in 2003, kept his checkbook closed this time.

A millionaire by virtue of his car-alarm business, Issa did provide mailing lists and urged his followers to sign the petitions, Spence said.

"He did more than quite a few others did, even though we didn't get any money," Spence said.

Issa could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The campaign also was hurt when the Republican governor decided to sit on the sidelines.

"I think it's old hat. I mean, I've (got) no interest," Schwarzenegger said this summer.

Francisco Estrada of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund said the campaign's collapse showed that Californians want "meaningful immigration reform that will move the state forward and not cause another ugly and divisive fight."

How often do you drive through a neighborhood where little homes border a busy 6 lane boulevard and wonder, "Why didn't the move when they had the chance?"

How often do you see for sale signs on homes with the windows and doors barred and graffiti on the fences a block away and wonder, "Why didn't they move when they had the chance?"

I doubt he'll run for reelection
rumor has it that's he got movie deals in the hopper...he's just going to do just like his "consultant" and predecessor, "Mr. Personality" himself and all around incompetent, Petee Wilson and screw things up enough that it'll be another 10 years after Ahnold leaves before we can get another Republican governor elected in California!

I can hear the 'Rats now..."Three years later and we're deeper in debt than we were when he arrived!"

HERMANDAD MEXICAN NATIONAL - MEXICAN NATIONALISTS

Hermandad Mexicana Nacional, or the Mexican brotherhood, has been at the forefront of the Mexican Reconquista movement for years, fighting at every step for the rights of Mexicans to invade the United States with impunity. They were involved in the vote fraud scandal that surrounded the Dornan/Sanchez congressional race of 1996. Hermandad relies on taxpayer funds to support its revolutionary activities.

Prior to the city council meeting, Lopez spoke for about thirty minutes in Spanish to a crowd of more than 100 Mexicans/Latinos who had been brought to the meeting to attempt to intimidate the council, a common practice of Mexican Reconquistas.Lopez told them that they had a right to be in America because they were the original inhabitants.

As they should. While their motive is transparent their analysis and implied conclusions are accurate.

When will the Republican loyalists realize the serious error they made when a rare opportunity arose to do legitimate harm to a bad trend?

And we were so close when we recalled the Dimwit Davis and had McClintock running for governor against "Bust-the-bank"...in fact even after Ahnold entered the race and was elected; had he enacted McClintock's "13 Percent Solution" when he arrived we would have already been on the way to recovery by now!
But close only counts in hand grenades and ...well you know the rest! LOL

And raise a toast to all the Republicans who voted for the RINO instead of McClintock!

Just saw on the NBC NEWS right now how Awnuld backed off the redistricting and the elimination of useless gov't. Didn't need a crystal ball to see that one coming. Of course he is still pursuing the social program improvements...bla bla bla...

The guy's a lefty ya'll!

BTW, I'm for illegals getting driver's licenses, as long as they are valid for south bound lanes only.

For the record, the license of illegals is nothing but a scam. Anyone can drive anywhere in America with a valid driver's license from their native country. The driver's license for the illegals is just a ruse so they can then go to the next window at the DMV and REGISTER TO VOTE!!!

Why all the silly games?

If the people of California want to run all the illegals out all they have to do is start busting the employers.

President Bush has authorized state and local police to enforce immigration laws (you're welcome) and had the CBP set up an 8 week training program to help them do so.

California needs to start helping itself instead of constantly whining to Washington. They could help themselves when it came to spending $3 Bill on embryo harvesting.

Perfect.

"Because we have a president who refuses to enforce the immigration laws."

Enforce them yourselves if you really want to. Start with one town and drive the illegals out of that town if you can get the other residents to agree with you.

And if you can't get you own neighbors to agree with you, your whining to the president will fall on death ears.

"National borders are the responsibility of the federal government"

So is bank robbery and kidnapping. Does your state refuse to get involved?

If you don't think that illegal immigrants are enough of a problem for your local police to bust the employers in your town who hire them, then I don't feel sorry for you.

Or maybe some people would prefer to attack President Bush rather than solve their own problem.

The broader point here is that whenever the vast majority of people in a society feel really strongly about any issue, the majority will always prevail. And it appear that the vast majority of Americans are not that concerned about dishwashers and lawn-clippers.

I was one of those, but I wouldn't call it not having the guts - I was accepting the reality that McClintock couldn't win. I would've voted for him in a heartbeat if he had any chance at all - I thought he was fantastic in the debates and I agreed with his policies much more than Arnold's. Unfortunately, voting for him would've been like voting for Perot in '92, in effect handing the Dems. the election.

I agree, AG. Californians cannot afford any more concessions to illegal aliens, period. Paying 9 billion dollars a year to support illegal aliens is a gunshot in the head to California taxpayers. Outrageous!

As many of us have said in the past, Senor Vincente Fox should be paying these bills, not us.

yeaaaaa,
I heard the same BS from the lefties during the Clintoon years...lucky for me I loss my hearing in one of my ears from a NVA rocket explosion in Viet Nam...so I don't hear half of what people say and I don't believe the other half until I have confirmed!

Kind of ironic isn't it, my "whining" supposedly falls on death ears and my critics "whining" actually DOES fall on a dead ear! LMAO

But I keep on complaining and along with others we got rid of a CA 'Rat governor, candidates got elected, laws got changed, propositions, referendums and laws got passed...and the hits keep on comin'...
My "whining" must be working or others wouldn't be complaining! LOL

Semper Fi,
Kelly
