Lion May Be Roaming Countryside Near Ronald Reagan Library
POSTED: 4:08 pm EST February 18, 2005
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- A large exotic cat -- possibly even an African lion -- may be roaming the rural countryside near the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, authorities said Friday.
Professional trackers were brought in to hunt for the animal after several sets of tracks, far too large for native bobcats or mountain lions, were found on a ranch not far from the hilltop library.
Officials warned residents in the area to be wary and to keep their pets indoors.
A ranch caretaker Tuesday reported seeing a glimpse of a large cat, possibly a lion, dart into the brush. At least two other people within a quarter-mile of the ranch reported seeing the cat, which officials estimate may weigh 600 pounds.
"It had to have come from somewhere in captivity," said Lorna Bernard, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Fish and Game. "We are going to be on it until we catch the animal or find evidence he's no longer in the area."
Earlier this month, the department removed nearly two dozen large cats, including lions and tigers, from a Moorpark animal sanctuary not far from the Reagan library. But Bernard said all the animals that had been kept on that property were accounted for.
They were removed because they had been kept in conditions that were deemed unsafe, including plastic cages and a ramshackle shed.
Also accounted-for were a lion and tiger housed at America's Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College, which is several miles from the library. Operations supervisor Michlyn Hines said Friday that they were in their enclosures.

And near the Clinton Library, there is also lyin.'
They sense the spirit of a true Lion nearby.
In more ways than one.
Nah, that's IN the Clinton Library. The wildlife outside consists of packs of rabid weasels.
Yet another lame attempt by the socialists to restrict the words and ideas of the great Ronaldus Magnus from being spread. Could they be more pathetic? ;-)
CS Lewis once wrote:
"I did not say to myself 'Let us represent Jesus as He really is in our world by a Lion in Narnia'; I said,
'Let us suppose that there were a land like Narnia and that the Son of God, as he became a Man in our
world, became a Lion there, and then imagine what would happen.'"
I lived right below... and I mean right below the library a few years back. There is plenty to eat. Rabbits, horses, deer, coyotes, small children. For a cat that size to hang out for a while.
This is what happens when you have people thinking Big Cats can make good pets.
Or a hoax. Those are the biggest paw prints I've ever seen.
I saw this story on the news last night. Huge paw prints. I hope that they can successfully capture the lion without killing him.
Let's hope that they can catch this lion alive. Then maybe we could adopt it [while in a zoo] as one of our own Viking Kitties! That would be a sight in a zoo a lion exibt with a Freeper plaque in front of it!
Lions do "roam." I don't trust the people of Simi Valley to correctly identify the type of cat it is. Most cougar sightings are bogus in the state. People mistake Golden Retrievers and tawny colored dogs for the big beautiful cats.
"It's sad, believe me, Missy, When you're born to be a sissy, Without the vim and verve, But I could show my prowess, Be a lion, not a mou-ess, If I only had the nerve!"
I just wonder if the lion is a Republican or a Commiecrat.
A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh
A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh
In the Valley, the Simi Valley
The lion sleeps tonight
In the Valley the quiet Valley
The lion sleeps tonight...
