"Sheikh Yousef Qaradhawi, one of the most influential clerics in Sunni Islam and head of the European Council for Fatwa and Research, has advocated non-painful wife-beating. "In his 1984 book, The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam, he wrote: `"Because of his natural ability and his responsibility for providing for his family, the man is the head of the house and of the family. He is entitled to the obedience and cooperation of his wife, and accordingly it is not permissible for her to rebel against his authority, causing disruption.

How do you get women of today to put up with such crap?

Depends on when and where, I suppose.  Which do the women fear more?   The beatings, or being ostracized by her family and community.  Not to leave out being condemned by her religion/God should she resist or not submit to her husband's discipline?  Wonder where a disobedient wife goes when she dies?  Rear em up that way and I suppose the submission and guilt becomes deeply, deeply conditioned.

One example where the "interference" of the state is called for . . .  The victim must believe she deserves the bad treatment.
