That sounds like servitude to me.

Well you can look at it that way. In fact, almost no one with a job in this country has an overall tax rate as low as 10% to 20% I'll bet (after considering employee and employer FICA, state and federal income taxes, property taxes, gas taxes & other sales taxes, a share of corporate taxes, etc, etc). So the situation is worse than you describe.

On the other hand, it's also fair to consider the value of government services you receive from all those taxes. I'd guess that's about half of what you pay (the rest being waste and fraud).

And in the final analysis, we voted for the people who put these taxes in place, so "servitude" doesn't seem like the best description. "Masochism" may be more like it.
