Why did I ask? Because of you hypocrites who keep crying "HOW DARE WE STARVE HER, HOW DARE WE STARVE HER." You can take a big bow, because it's because of you.
There is a big difference between taking someone off of life support and disconnecting a feeding tube.
I look at Christopher Reeve. I don't know if he could feed himself. If he couldn't I don't think anyone ever thought of not feeding him.
No one even tried to rehabilitate Terri Schiavo. That's part of the problem with this case. You don't know how much functioning she could have gained back.
If she was on a ventilator, then I could see disconnecting the vent. That also goes very quickly.
She's breathing on her own, and just needs food. That's not heroic efforts. They can add a feeding tube. Her parents also want to care for her.
I think we all need to look at this case and be sure we have living wills written so that our loved ones know our wishes.
Bull pucky. If I want to die I should have a notarized statement to that effect that with my own hand I signed. Starvation/dehydration is cruel, assisted suicide would not be. A right to die law should explicitly require that we sign it. In Oregon that is a requirement, also that no court, doctor, or guardian can make that decision. Only you in writing can make it. That is the way it should be and incidentally, only 1% of the decedents in Oregon have availed themselves of that right, and a Catholic never would.
