While the Pope is a conservative on mattes of morals, it's important to realize he's a liberal on matters of faith. As a conservative moralist, he shares his views with many other religionists--including conservative Protestants and most Muslims and orthodox Jews. As a liberal on matters of the Catholic faith, however, he shares his views with the likes of Mahoney and Kasper and Weakland. The problem is that many Catholics see only one side of John Paul II and fail to recognize the harm he has done to the Catholic Church for twenty-five years. He will leave this world with his Church in far worse condition than when he first took over the papacy.

Please explain, I'm not familiar with this debate about the Catholic church and being "liberal" on matters of faith.
And how has he damaged the Church?

I think you forget that Roman Catholicism is the only religiously inclusive Christian "denomination" - for lack of a better categorization of the original Church - and recognizes that God is objective in nature. While we believe to possess the fullness of this objective Truth, it is not the case that this Truth is hidden or needs to be realized. Rather, the Truth of God's existence is ever-present and therefore, everyone's experience of God, regardless of how wacked-out or bizarre we may think it is, has a certain degree of Truth to it as it is a product of their subjective experience of the objective Lord. It would be intellectual dishonesty to disregard any other man's experience of God because he isn't aware of the Truth's of Jesus Christ and His life, death, and resurrection.

As a liberal on matters of the Catholic faith, however, he shares his views with the likes of Mahoney and Kasper and Weakland. The Pope is no Mahoney, Kasper or Weakland. Once again, the Pope defends fully orthodox Catholic teaching, and all you can do is slander the Holy Father. What kind of a faithful Catholic does that?

The smoke of satan entered the sanctuary long before Pope John Paul II became pope. The genesis of these liberal problems you cite today is clearly indicated by liberal interpretations of the teachings of Vatican II in the 10 or so years after the close of that council.
John Paul II is far from a liberal in any dimension.
