Beirut's Berlin Wall
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ ^ | February 23, 2005 | David Ignatius

Posted on 02/22/2005 10:40:49 PM PST by BCrago66

From a leader in the Lebanese anti-Syrian occupation movement:

"It's strange for me to say it, but this process of change has started because of the American invasion of Iraq," explains Jumblatt. "I was cynical about Iraq. But when I saw the Iraqi people voting three weeks ago, 8 million of them, it was the start of a new Arab world." Jumblatt says this spark of democratic revolt is spreading. "The Syrian people, the Egyptian people, all say that something is changing. The Berlin Wall has fallen. We can see it."

mmh...Wally Jumblatt now a progressive huh.

Here's Wally just a while ago.

Lebanon's English-language paper, The Daily Star, published a February 3, 2003 article on Walid Jumblatt, a Druze leader in Lebanon and parliamentary opposition member.
The article quoted Jumblatt as saying that the true axis of evil was one of "oil and Jews," calling President George W. Bush a "mad emperor," and criticizing British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar.
According to the article, Jumblatt also expressed "great joy at the destruction of the Columbia space shuttle." The following is the article in its entirety: (1)

"Great Joy" for Destruction of Columbia Shuttle

"Walid Jumblatt lashed out Sunday against Western politicians and 'the Jews,' calling on Arab leaders to hold popular referendums before allowing in foreign troops for a war against Iraq."

"The Progressive Socialist Party leader also said he felt 'great joy' at Saturday's destruction of the United States space shuttle Columbia, because it carried an Israeli astronaut who had taken part in aggression against 'Lebanon and Iraq.'"

"'The true axis of evil that rules the world today is an axis of oil and Jews,' Jumblatt said at his family home of Mukhtara, Chouf."

*********************************

Hopefully Lebanon will be free of Syria,Hizbullah and other crazies.

Wally can dissapear too ...fine by me.

Hey, for the Mid-East, this guy is Locke, Voltaire and Jefferson all rolled into one. But a little more seriously, I think it only strengthens the author's point that the Iraq election was tipping point toward liberty in the region, for even a formerly (and maybe presently) rabid anti-American leader recognizes it.

Your right comenting on the *whoever/whatevers now voicing confirmatory rhetoric...and praise.

The other day..Debka mentioned Walid and others in Lebanons political circuit as being sgned on to Lebanon making peace with Israel .
all this is connected to UNSCR 1559.
and ya...part of the reason why Harriri was murdered.

Syria is packing its bag to leave.
But will Hizbullah?

Does Wally and company cut a deal...let Hizbullah stay on.
All the militias are to disband under UNSCR 1559.

I'll be watching to see/hear what Walid has to forward here.

See if Walid is really a progressive

...or just a con artist.

Lebanon may be ready for Democratic form.

They are however nowhere's near ready for Israel.

Amazing. This was the first article I read this morning...and I highlighted the same quote you did! I sent it to Instapundit.

For those casting aspersions at Jumblatt, here's what Ignatius says in the preceding paragraph...before Jumblatt's quote:

Over the years, I've often heard him denouncing the United States and Israel, but these days, in the aftermath of Hariri's death, he's sounding almost like a neoconservative. He says he's determined to defy the Syrians until their troops leave Lebanon and the Lahoud government is replaced.

That quote almost takes one's breath away.
