"There is even a new genre of music – "emo""

Emo is new??? Well six or seven years old is new I guess if you're comparing it to Mozart.

Then again, it is a worldnutdaily article.

The "emo" label has been applied to pretty much everything that didn't conveniently fit under the "alternative" banner since the late 90's.. From Ben Folds Five and Elliot Smith to Sunny Day Real Estate and Sparta. Only recently was it hijacked and repackaged as a sort of limp-wristed punk-pop that's marketed almost exclusively to teenage girls. Bands like Taking Back Sunday (with songs like "Cute without the E") and The Used (with songs like "A Box Full of Sharp Objects") have made hyper-emotional teenage girls their niche. They're fully aware of the cutting craze, and they happily feed it.

And yes, this is new. It's obviously dervied from every other self-destructive fad that's come down the pike over the years, but it's still new to this generation.

Besides, what's more important: alerting parents to this insanity, or accurately covering the history of "emo" rock?

According to my kids, emo has been around for 20 years.

It grew out of the punk rock culture.
