Thomas still a bad choice, Hill says

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

By Kyla King

The Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS -- In the 13 years since Anita Hill testified during Senate confirmation hearings about alleged sexual harassment by then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Clarence Thomas, she has written books, taught at two universities and penned numerous opinion pieces.

And although she will be in Grand Rapids on Thursday to speak about race and gender issues, she expects people also will want to talk about her role in one of the biggest political controversies of the time.

"It was a big event, and I think even I have underestimated how significant it was in our culture and political life," said Hill, who spoke with The Press by telephone from her office at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. "It's certainly a fair question."

Hill said she will welcome all inquiries about sexual harassment and women's public, political and economic issues during the question-and-answer period of her presentation.

Beforehand, the 48-year-old Massachusetts resident will spend more than an hour discussing "Race, Gender and Power in America" at the Calvin College Chapel as part of the West Michigan Women's Studies Council Nokomis Foundation Lecture.

Hill said she plans to focus on contemporary issues having to do with "where we are as a generation on the issues of women in political and public leadership."

"It is still important for us to look back at the election that we just went through ... and get a sense of how successful we are in influencing these elections," she said.

And yes, for the record, Hill does have an opinion on rumors that Justice Thomas could be nominated for the court's top spot if ailing Chief Justice William Rehnquist steps down.

"I think it's clear my feeling is he shouldn't have been on the court, and I certainly think he would be a very bad choice for chief justice," she said.

"He hasn't shown the leadership quality of being able to bring the court together on controversial issues," she said, adding that, in many split opinions, his positions have been more divisive than the majority opinion.

Hill's appearance during Black History Month, and just before the start of Women's History Month, is well-timed, said Helen Sterk, professor and chairwoman of Communication Arts &Sciences at Calvin College.

"Anita Hill has been a lightning rod for significant debate on race and gender, and we are very pleased to welcome her to Grand Rapids to continue that discussion," Sterk said.

You know...

I've seen his record of service to the nation...

And I've seen hers.

I'll take his.

In his willingness to revisit (usually through dissents or concurring opinions) the Court's fraudulent past holdings on issues like the Commerce Clause power, First Amendment Establishment Clause issues, 14th Amendment substantive due process and the general welfare clause of Article I, Justice Thomas has distinguished himself as a jurist committed to an intellectually honest interpretation of the Constitution. Yes...his opinions are sometimes far outside what is considered the "legal mainstream" but that is only a reflection of how far "maintream constitutional law" is from the actual Constitution.

Justice Thomas would be, by far, the best choice for Chief Justice...far better even than Justice Scalia

Well, what did they expect her to say? "I was wrong and he's a good justice?" Of course not!

Well now...there's somebody whose opinion is really really relevant....

Perhaps she could also provide us her opinion on whether or not one should really squeeze the Charmin, or if natural peanutbutter tastes better than the other kind...oh....and her deepest thoughts on why light only travels at the speed of light!

Yesssir...Ms. Anita Hill. My choice for "Miss Relevant"!

In the world of the Dems, a hair on a coke can is far more eggregious to rape and then later an assault in the White House. It is indeed a parallel universe.

Geez, it seems so long ago, before we had a president getting blow jobs in the Oval Office and molesting women left and right to the cheers of the NOW gang.

Remember - the most important issue in the whole world was whether or not a guy used the phrase "pubic hair on my coke can" in the presence of this delicate little flower.

Clinton would have just grabbed her hand and shoved it down his pants, before punching her in the mouth.

Wouldn't it be a shame if Thomas misses the appointment by a

I used to work with a fellow who used that expression entirely too much. It got to be both disgusting and boring. The worst part is I still am reminded of his foul mouth every time I put on a radio comm headset.

Notice how the article, while saying she has taught at two diferent universities, doesn't say where she is on the faculty NOW. That's becuase she's been tossed by two different law schools once they realized that, despite her once-marquee name, she was as vacant a legal mind and as lazy a legal worker as they come. Last I heard she was stuck in some jerkwater college's department of sociology, the so-called discipline that is truly the last refuge of an academic scoundrel, but the paper's reluctance to name it leads me to believe even that make-work position has fizzled out by now.

If Clarence Thomas had the looks of Denzel Washington we'd never heard of Anita Hill.

By the way, I know Arlen Specter is a favorite target around these parts because of his performance during the Clinton impeachment, and rightly so, but give the man credit: He very gently, but very completely, took Anita Hill apart with his cross-examination during the Thomas hearings.

"Geez, it seems so long ago, before we had a president getting blow jobs in the Oval Office..."

Ya know, just reading that makes my blood boil again at the absolute disgrace this guy was..... Reagan wouldn't enter the Oval Office without a jacket out of "respect for the office". We go from such a great man to a piece of shit in 4 yrs. Such a shame...
