Beetle Cereal 'Too Organic' for Hong Kong Shopper
Ireland Online ^ | 2-26-2005

An upmarket Hong Kong grocery store is being prosecuted after a customer allegedly discovered 575 beetles in a jar of cereal, officials and media reports said today.

The customer, lawyer Philip Dykes, said the breakfast cereal was “too organic for my liking”, according to the South China Morning Post.

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has charged the grocer store with providing “food not of the nature, substance or quality demanded by the purchaser”, said Emily Mak, a department spokeswoman.

The lawyer allegedly found the beetles and 17 larvae in the plastic jar, which he bought in 2003, it was reported.

And 17 larvae. I think the real story here is that someone actually counted them.

I think it's safe to say that the lawyer isn't a fisherman.

He had it in a jar since 2003 and it's the grocer's fault????

I'm sure it wasn't Lawyer Dykes...probably had some lackey do the numbers.

Now that I think about it, I've got two unopened boxes of "Warner's Crunch Time" cereal in the basement. It was a promotional thing after the Rams won the Super Bowl in... hmm... when was that... FIVE years ago? Maybe I should be surprised no critters have come through the box, yet.

In Bangkok years ago, my mom ordered a noodle dish for lunch at a nice hotel we stayed at. It was served with sauteed honeybees.
