WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens said Tuesday he would push to apply broadcast decency standards to subscription television and radio services like cable and satellite. "Cable is a much greater violator in the indecency area," the Alaska Republican told the National Association of Broadcasters, which represents most local television affiliates. "I think we have the same power to deal with cable as over-the-air" broadcasters. "There has to be some standard of decency," he said. Stevens told reporters afterward that he would push legislation to apply the standards to cable and satellite radio and television. Federal regulations bar broadcast television and radio stations from airing obscene material and restrict indecent material, such as sexually explicit discussions or profanity, to late-night hours when children are less likely to be watching or listening. But so far those restrictions have not applied to subscription television and radio services offered by companies like Comcast Corp. (up $0.28 to $32.74, Research) or Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (up $0.38 to $5.95, Research), which recently signed shock jock Howard Stern. Stevens said he disagreed "violently" with assertions by the cable industry that Congress does not have the authority to impose limits on what they air. "If that's the issue they want to take on, we'll take it on and let the Supreme Court decide," he said. The House of Representatives has approved legislation to raise fines to $500,000 from $32,500 on television and radio broadcasters that violate indecency limits. The Senate has legislation pending to increase fines as well. But neither bill has provisions that would extend indecency restrictions to cable and satellite services.

Ted Stevens is up for re-election in '08. Some sane person in Alaska needs to take the nomination away from him. Ted Stevens must be removed from public office.
Here's Ted's contact info.

I don't have a daughter. I'll burn that bridge when I get to it.
Yep ...it came up zilch. Either I'm doing something wrong...possible.... or the search engine here is not 100%.
"Republicans are barking up the wrong tree with this indecency stuff, anti-abortion and Christian values crap."
Michael Copps, the democrat at the FCC, is the guy that has been the main player in getting anti-indecency fines levied. Copps has finally found a mentally unstable stooge like Ted Stevens to further his anti-free speech agenda.
Ted Stevens needs to be removed from office in '08.
The day the Republican Party starts supporting this crap, is the day I stop voting for them.
What the hell is the point of growing up and being an adult if you cant enjoy some "adult" humor or other material once and a while.
This dope will cost the republicans dearly--enough to have people who are conservatives vote for the dems
"The day the Republican Party starts supporting this crap, is the day I stop voting for them."
With his ignorent narrow minded comments today Ted Stevens just gave away a million votes to the democrats in the next national elections. Ted Stevens needs to be removed from public office before he does more damage. He's out of control.
We need a more libertarian Republican Party, what ever happened to just leaveing people alone.
Politicans of both parties present a much greater danger to this country than cable TV does.
If I had a dime for every censor in history who has said that.
On this topic, most of them were correct.
Smut? What "smut"?
Your typical "Adult film" on TV has:
A woman with fake boobs
and fake fingernails
and fake pubic hair (none or a mohawk)
and fake eyelashes
and fake hair color
holding her hand in front of her fake crotch blocking the view
while the "man" (usually a fake guy or gay guy)
faking groans (bad sound editing)
faking pleasure smiles (he's gay)
faking intercourse
faking like doggie position is the only position
faking any rhythm other than the same rhythm from the other movie
fakes us all out by simulating "adult" stuff.
Is this what that fake Republican calls "indecency"?
If this is "indecent", what is the real stuff like with him and his wife?
The Republicans need to concentrate on real issues that affect our founding principles and stop faking like they care about them (e.g., freedom to view what I want to on pay TV) . . .
fakery and all.

A lot of typical libertine RINO comments on this thread as usual. But bravo for Senator Stevenson for standing up for what's right.
I think "american idol" is obscene myself, more so than naked women and foul language. You have a bunch of kids groveling for a panel of talentless sadists. It makes my skin crawl and I can't watch it. Maybe Ted Stevens should look into this.
What exactly does it do to the children? I remember finding the old man's hidden stash of Penthouse when I was a kid and I don't think I was warped by it. At the time, it was like finding gold!
Somehow, I managed to become a fairly well-adjusted contributing member of society despite being exposed to Penthouse magazine when I was but a wee fragile child.

Stevens is a naive fool, playing into the hands of lefties. I generally just ignore these funny little references to 'rinos' I see on these threads, because I figure people are entitled to their opinions, but you seem to be calling me a 'rino.' I suppose I shouldn't ignore them because the anti-free speech jerks who slander with the term are pushing a leftie agenda. It's the dems. at the FCC who are pushing the anti-indecency legislation. Stevens is just the lapdog.
