REID JOINS ROCK THE VOTE
STUDENTS TO OPPOSE SOCIAL SECURITY PRIVATIZATION
YOUNG PEOPLE TO SUFFER MOST FROM BENEFIT LOSSES
Washington, D.C. – Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) joined representatives of MTV's Rock the Vote and college students from around the country at a Capitol Hill news conference today to show how much young people will lose under President Bush’s Social Security Privatization Plan. If the plan passes, Nevadans in their late teens and twenties could lose as much as 35% of their annual benefit by the time they retire.
"The Bush privatization plan is a bad deal for young Americans," said Reid. "The President promises increased benefits but in reality, private accounts will only deliver cuts and new debt."
The President's plan to privatize Social Security would hit college kids and twenty-somethings the hardest, according to calculations based on formulas by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. College students and others born between 1983 and 1987 would lose more than 35% of their total annual benefit. Twenty-somethings born between 1975 and 1982 would lose more than 30% of their annual benefit. If Social Security is kept intact, young people will not face the steep benefit cuts they would get from privatization.
"Nevadans don’t like privatization, they don't like benefit cuts, and they don'’t like the amount of debt the President is willing to take on," said Reid. "Democrats are united on this issue. We won't let this happen."
Reid was joined at the news conference by his Democratic colleagues, Sens. Charles Schumer (D-NY), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and Max Baucus (D-MT). College students at the news conference used a web-based calculator to illustrate how much of their Social Security benefit would disappear under the President’s privatization plan. Hans Riemer, the Washington director of Rock the Vote, was also at the news conference.
"Mr. President, please let us in to your events on Social Security,” said Riemer. “Young people would like a seat at the table. We'd like to talk to you about why you would support a plan that cuts benefits for young people so much."
Ugh. College students are so impressionable (I say this a mere few years removed from the bastion of pseudo-intellectualism). Even if these supposed benefit cuts are true, which I highly doubt, the propagandists and their targets are not considering that if nothing is done, there would be NO social security payments in the future. So, even under this biased treatment,65% of payments is vastly preferable to 0%. I hate the Dems, but you have to at least admire their ability to disseminate lies and get people to believe them.
Well, he got one right.
"Ugh. College students are so impressionable". Maybe the Supreme court was right. These juveniles do not have the critical thinking skills to make complex decisions like whether to take another persons life or get a hamburger. It is all so confusing to them.
I can't think of a single Congressional Democrat who is honorable.
I smell fear coming form the Dems. Fear that Rove the mad genius is going to steal yet another demographic group from the Dems, namely, young voters. And well the Dems should be scared shitless. Soc. Security reform is a biiiig winner amongst young voters. Poll after poll shows most Gen Xer's and Yer's don't think Soc. Security will be there when they retire. So, we are to believe that given those poll results most young people don't support Soc. Security reform. I think not.
If these collages kid had taken some math and could add more than 2+2 they wouldn't have people like Reid doing their thinking. Lets dumb them down some more and maybe they will give up their whole check and expect nothing in return. Hard to believe that education now equates to indoctrination.

I almost feel sorry for Harry Reid...he's on the wrong side of history at the worst possible time. Everything is going George W. Bush's way as the Middle East shows.

Fix It, Don't Nix It: Reid Works To Strengthen Social Security, Invites Nevadans To Join Him And Senate Colleagues At Town Hall Discussion
WASHINGTON, DC – Responding to concerns about the President’s plan to privatize Social Security, Senator Harry Reid will hold a town hall meeting in Las Vegas on Saturday, March 5th, 2005.
The event will be held at UNLV’s Tam Alumni Center. It is free and open to the public. Tickets can be obtained through Sen. Reid’s Las Vegas office by calling 388-5043.
Reid will be joined by 2 of his Senate colleagues, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND). The Senators will also stop in New York City and Philadelphia on Friday and Phoenix on Saturday to participate in similar Social Security forums around the country.
