Indonesian Court Sentences Terror Chief to 30 Months in Prison for 2002 Bali Nightclub Bombing

The accused leader of an al-Qaida-linked terrorist group was sentenced to 30 months in jail by an Indonesian court on Thursday for conspiracy charges related to the 2002 Bali nightclub bombing that killed 202 people, including seven Americans.

Abu Bakar Bashir was cleared of more serious charges that he ordered the bombing, which was aimed at foreign tourists and also killed 88 Australians. He was also cleared of charges related to the 2003 bombing of the J.W. Marriott hotel in Jakarta that killed 12 and charges he incited his followers to launch terrorist attacks.

"Neither the defense witnesses nor the prosecutors' witnesses said that the defendant has planned or provoked other people to commit the bombings," the court said in its verdict.

"The perpetrators of the Marriott bombings admitted they did that on their own will," it said. "Therefore the defendant has to be acquitted from primary charges."

Australia and the United States consider Bashir to be the spiritual head of the al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist group. Intelligence officials say the group has cells across Southeast Asia.

The five-judge panel said that Bashir, who has been in jail since April, would get credit for time served and could be freed before the end of 2006.

30 months? 30 years would be too light.

This sentence is okay with me as long as he serves his 30 months in general population in a jail in the heart of Texas.

I hope all the American and Australian parents who stupidly sent their kids lunch money down the rathole of Tsunamigate feel better now. These are our enemies. Let there be no doubt about it.

Not for the Thais. They are wonderful people, and were hit hard.

So are the Acehnese. The ordinary people of Aceh are worlds away from the insanity of somebody like Abu Bakr Bashir, who is after all, not a true Indonesian.

Abu Bakr Bashir is a hated Wahabbi Yemeni propagandist who flaunts his contempt of traditional Javanese (and by extension Indonesian) values.

The man is undeniably clever, and more importantly, he is old. Hopefully he will die in prison. If not, we can hope that he will die painfully soon after his release at the end of 2006.

What a bunch of crap. This sentence is a signal to terrorists that the Indonesians are very terror-friendly. I wonder if the son-of-a-bitch will get credit for time served?

Whether he dies in prison isn't important. He shouldn't be allowed two steps from the exit before he is hit smack between the eyes with a dose of his own medicine.

Yes, he WILL get credit for time served, and I too indeed hope somebody whacks the perverted maggot the moment he steps into the light of day, if not before.

Gee, thirty whole months. I'm sure that makes all those Aussie families feel that justice has been served, lightly, in the Muslim country of Indonesia. Well, I guess they could have given him a reward for killing infidels, so I guess this is a tiny concession.
