BOSTON CLASS The Boston Red Sox visited Washington yesterday for the traditional World Series championship visit to the White House. From all accounts and given the team's relative lack of experience in such matters the Sox did baseball proud. And America. A new season opens one month from today the Sox vs. the Yankees at the Stadium and from then on it will be baseball business as usual: Go Yanks! No, we haven't gone all mushy. But give credit where it is due: Baseball's "idiots" the team's term demonstrated yesterday that for all of last month's overheated rhetoric, the current crop of Red Sox has some class. Following the White House stop, the team traveled over to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to visit wounded GIs. Charles Steinberg, Sox executive vice president for public affairs, credited team President Larry Lucchino with the hospital visit: "[Larry] said, 'The Boston Red Sox are going to the White House; don't just turn around and come home. Make something more out of it. Go and see these soldiers and acknowledge to them that we know who the real heroes are.' " You can't argue with that. Kudos to Lucchino and the boys from Boston for a little off-season perspective. Now, play ball!
