Report: NBC in Talks To Buy Out MSNBC Stake
Associated Press | March 3, 2005

NBC Universal is in talks to buy out Microsoft Corp.'s stake in MSNBC, the struggling news cable channel, according to a news report today.

The New York Post, quoting unnamed sources, reported that the two companies are in advanced talks to close a deal that would put NBC Universal in full control of MSNBC, while Microsoft would still have access to some of NBC's content for online use.

A spokesman for NBC Universal, a unit of General Electric Co., declined to comment, as did a spokesman for Microsoft.

Microsoft and NBC founded MSNBC and its companion online news site in 1995 with a joint investment of US$400 million.

GE shares rose 9 cents to $35.69 in late morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange, while Microsoft shares fell 3 cents to $25.23 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Getting the MS out of MSNBC can only be an improvement for that channel.

To tell you the truth, I like MSNBC. I probably watch it as much as any other news channel. Naturallly I don't watch everything on MSNBC and I can't bear some of the people on there for more than a few seconds but I find it to be pretty middle of the road for the most part. At least they are willing to put on Imus which has got to be the most politically incorrect show in America. You have to give them credit for that.

NBC would be better off selling their stake in MSNBC to Rupert Murdoch, so Murdoch can turn the network into "The Joke News Channel."

Short of the name and maybe some behind the scenes stuff, I dont even see why Microsoft is part of this. You would think they would plaster MICROSOFT © everywhere...the MSN in the MSNBC reminds me of the old MSN online service when they first started as a dial up...lame. Seems like a real lose-lose if I was Microsoft. Especially with those crappy ratings.

Murdoch doesnt need to buy them to turn them into the Joke Channel...they already are.

As bad as MSNBC is doing, I'm surprised NBC isn't suing them to remove the NBC.

They are pretty good on the breaking news things, I have to say.

Having Ron Reagan on is ruining the day time for me though.

I think $1.83 is a little much. You can get a soda and a bag of chips for that.

That's about $2 million per viewer.
