Parents: it's time to step up
Townhall ^ | March 4, 2005 | Rebecca Hagelin

It's been quite cold here in Northern Virginia this past week - we've had below freezing temperatures and enough snow and ice to close local schools for two days.

But if you were to judge the weather based on what many teen girls are wearing, you would think the temperature outside was 1,000 degrees - actually, that's probably the body temperature of the teen boys who, believe me, are noticing what the girls are wearing. Which is not much.

I am blessed (truly I am!) to be the mother of three teenagers. I'm keenly aware of the clothing "fads" and all the time it takes for my boys to carefully pick out clothes that make it look as if they've given no thought to getting dressed.

It's actually quite amusing to me to watch my boys and their friends deliberate about what or what not to buy or wear. I often have flashbacks to my own days of observing the strange dressing practices that my teen brothers and my folks' reaction to their choices. Bottom line was, my parents didn't care much for my brothers choices of clothing or hair. Fast-forward thirty years and now I'm the fuddy-duddy parent that thinks my sons' choices in clothes and hair are a bit, shall we say, undesirable. But I don't make a big deal out of it - they are clean, it's their style, and there's nothing actually wrong with their "look" - it just ain't my cup of tea. Although some guys "sag" to the extreme (i.e., wear their pants so low that underwear shows and other objects are in danger of showing), these are not the problems of most of the teen boys I know.

It's different with the teenage girls. Sadly, most of them look just plain trashy.

Call me sexist. Call me a prude. Call me what you will. But I absolutely refuse to allow my daughter to dress according to the dictates of the manufacturers of girls' clothing, which has been patterned on the preferences of such role-models as Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, et al.

The sad fact is that a lot of today's tween and teen girls dress like street-walkers.

Let's hope the pendulum swings back to a more conservative look. And that conservatives continue to fight against this trend.

Parenting involves steering children towards the right choices. There was many a time that my father said to me that my disliking him was OK so long as I did what he said. And although at the time I had considerable dislike of the various parental restrictions he laid down, 35 years later I like him just fine. And I understand him a lot better.

None of his kids went to jail.

All of his kids married and have jobs.

None of his kids are substance abusers.

May I do as good a job with my kids.

My daughter is four and would prefer to go "commando", but thankfully, my wife is pretty steadfast in her modesty requirements. I'm just happy that battle is over by the time I get home from work.

It's just about impossible to find little girl clothes that don't look trashy. I just about fell over when I saw "low-rider" pants in size 4T at Target!

I feel your pain. The spring clothes are out at Wal-mart, and they're awfully skimpy. My little girls end up in their brothers' hand-me-downs, when we can't find enough decent girls' clothes at the secondhand store.

My 4-year-old undresses, too. It's a phase. Sometimes she decides to change her clothes, and gets distracted part way through.

My boy wanted to wear his jeans so loose they slipped down.. I told him that was fine, but I was going to staple his jeans to his hips to make sure they didn't slide all the way off.

The look on his face was priceless. Now it's Wrangler boot cut jeans and ropers.

I totally understand both of you.

I have enough hand-me-downs from friends' kids to keep my 6yo modestly clad until she's at least 10........and by then I'm sure I'll have acquired even more.

No kidding. I cringe every fall when it's time for back-to-school shopping for our two daughters. It's really hard to find clothes that aren't slutty.

But it's not the fault of the stores. They are just carrying what people want to buy - it's entirely the fault of so-called "parents" that let MTV raise their kids and let the kids run their house.

Yep. We occasionally get "the streak" through the living room, accompanied by the sounds of "wooo-woooooo!!". Heaven knows where that came from. :)

saw it. well school uniforms work wonders. all girls schools work even better. amazing what the lack of an audience of boys can accomplish. the girls at xsteen's HS wear SWEATPANTS under their plaid skirts when it is cold. She is into the preppy look which is polo shirts and cardigan sweaters and pearls, so i have no complaints. even xsbrownie's school, even without a uniform requirement, she came home and said she had to wear tops that didn't show her belly when she RAISES HER ARMS. so forget midriff bearing, they have to be long enough not to show skin when their hands are over their head in gym class, which is every day.

My wife does a fantastic job of buying very conservative clothes for our daughters. I remember one day she came home with a disgusted look on her face, I asked what was wrong. She says "I was at Walmart (I think) and saw a Kiddie thong!"

I have a heck of a time getting shirts long enough to not expose skin when Jax raises her arms.........I have buy larger sizes and cuff the sleeves way up because her torso is so long.

because they have gym class every day and don't wear a uniform, rather just wear regular clothes, she mostly wears sweatpants or jeans and tshirts, and her tshirts are a bit oversized.

Same here! My dad was stern to say the least! My every waking thought involved what my dad would do or say if he caught me doing this or that which kept me from doing this or that!

My son is 13 and we have homeschooled him through middle school due to the lack of discipline and learning going on at the school he would have attended. This year, he is going to return to public school for high school. I am not excited about it but it is a choice we are making to "just see how it goes". The girls at the high school dress better then the girls at the middle school. These mothers are training their daughters to get attention for the wrong reasons!!
