Security a fear for some as NASCAR hits Mexico

Mexico's 1st NASCAR race a challenge
MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Ron Hornaday Jr. took a first glance at the winding course for Sunday's NASCAR road course and acted a bit confused.

"Which way does it go?" asked the veteran Busch series driver.

The good ol' boys have already broken free of their Southern roots. Now, they're eyeing a potentially booming market south of the border.

NASCAR will take its second-tier Busch Series to Mexico this weekend, the first time such a prominent points race has been held outside the United States and perhaps the precursor to going international with the Nextel Cup drivers.

About a half-dozen Cup regulars have entered the Mexican race - it's a rare off week for the Nextel series - but Tony Stewart won't be among them. He's wary of traveling to a still-developing nation.

"Anywhere you go where they've got to get the Federales or the police or whatever they are to escort your rigs to the track, that's not somewhere where I want to race," Stewart said.

Making it back to the United States for the March 13 races at Las Vegas is what some drivers are most worried about.

"I'm worried about not being seen again," Kenny Wallace says.

"I don't really know if it's dangerous or it's not," McMurray says. "I'm really not worried about it. I've been told to use some common sense."

The crowd favorites, though, will be drivers like Fernandez, who has raced on the Mexico City course in open-wheel cars.

"I'm very excited," said Fernandez, a former CART star said. "I feel like a kid again. I've been racing for a long time and I have to thank Hendrick Motorsports and Lowe's for this opportunity for me to be able to race in front of my hometown fans. It's a dream come true."

Fernandez even has a warning for his American rivals.

"My advantage is the fans," he said recently at Daytona. "If I don't win, the other drivers will have a problem. They cannot touch me, or otherwise they will not get out of the country."

PING for this weekends race....not Nextel Cup but a very unusual and interesting Busch race in Mexico City.

What with all the terrorists and illegals coming across the borders from there, I doubt seriously if I will even give this race a second look.

Personally, I am VERY disappointed in the decision that Nextal and Busch and NASCAR has made to even considering racing down there.

"I'm worried about not being seen again," Kenny Wallace says.

LOL

My son calls him, "Krazy Kenny".

I don't care for road courses all that much, but I'll have to watch this one.

Yes, Nascar's decision on the schedule this year has raised a few eyebrows.

First of all, the Daytona 500 was not as good as years past because of the change in the restrictor plate almost suffocating the engines, making the usual close racing almost non existent. The last 10-20 laps were good.

Then we went to California which was mostly a snooze fest even though the TV ratings were up. I'm afraid any new viewers were probably turned off by an unexciting race. This race is usually uneventful and more so this year because of the change in spoiler height and soft lousy tires making passing almost impossible. Most drivers said they had to hug the bottom line all day.

Then they give the Cup race a weekend off just as we were getting started and send the Busch drivers to Mexico for a points race. That gave most of them no choice but to go or lose points.

The trucks had a military escort from Laredo to Mexico City and now the drivers are warned to stay in the hotel when not at the track and to have bodyguards. Doesn't sound like much fun to me.

The RCR team went down there to test earlier this year. They went out to a bar and had 4 beers, were charged $450.00 and told pay up or go to jail or worse.

The new "Brain" trust in the younger France needs to rethink his decisions IMHO.

I helped a friend campaign an offroad car and spent the night in an Ensanada jail in 1975. I've been back to Mexico only a handful of times since on business, but only because I had to.

It's politics, Sis, and nothing can change my mind on this.  I am VERY upset over this move.  And like I said, I doubt very much if I will tune in out of protest.

Nothing in Mexico has anything of interest to me.  This was a very sad decision, IMHO.

Thank you for posting this thread.

This looks like a good race to have on while I attend to other stuff like painting & cleaning out the fist tanks.
