By Eyewitness News' Ken Rosato
(Newark-WABC, April 14, 2005) Commuters through Newark's Penn Station this morning got an important lesson on security. The safety blitz was part of an ongoing effort to get folks vigilant of suspicious activity.
Eyewitness News reporter Ken Rosato is live in Newark with more.
It's security reminder day at Newark's Penn Station and police were out in force this morning making sure commuters keep their eyes and ears open, and report anything suspicious.
Captain Joseph Kelly,New Jersey Transit Police: "we're happy that the customers are getting more involved in their awareness"
Hundreds of trains and buses flow into and out of Newark's Penn Station everyday. Many of those trains and buses head to Manhattan, making good security in Newark, especially important.
K-9's were out and police handed out security awareness cards with a number to call in case people spot an abandoned package or anything that appears suspicious. Commuters took note.
Rachel Campbell, Commuter: "There are guard dogs and the cops walk up and down here a lot. There's a lot of change and that makes me feel a lot safer."
Just a few blocks away from Newark's Penn Station stands the Prudential building which, according to the Feds, was to be the target of a terror attack by Al queada operatives.
Nainash Patel, Commuter "I live in Newark and right around Prudential area. I think it's a good idea that they are doing this."
Police say that it is a good thing to have a reminder at all times to remind people that they should always be aware of terrorist plots
