Shooting kills two on Mexican border

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico- A gunman on a bicycle opened fire on a group of men in a parked car and two bystanders in this border city, killing two people and wounded a third, investigators said Saturday.

The killings took place around 11:30 p.m. Friday in the Colonia Victoria neighborhood, said Juan Antonio Varela, head of the ministerial police for Nuevo Leon state, which includes Nuevo Laredo.

He said a group of young men was drinking beer and smoking marijuana in a parked car when an assailant pedaled up and started shooting. Witnesses said he targeted passengers in the car as well as a couple that was standing nearby.

A 24-year-old man in the car was shot six times in the face, neck and shoulder and died immediately. Another passenger, age 22, sustained two gunshot wounds to the chest and died while being treated at the city's General Hospital. Police said he was carrying a bag of marijuana at the time of his death.

A third victim, identified by police as 19-year-old Cipriano Jimenez, from the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz, was injured by a bullet that struck him in the left arm. Varela said Jimenez was standing with his girlfriend near the parked car when the shooting began.

Early Saturday, police arrested two unidentified men and were working to link them to the shooting, Varela said.

The two deaths bring to 18 the number of people shot and killed in ambush-styled attacks in Nuevo Laredo so far this year. The city is located across the border from Laredo, Texas.

The border region in Mexico's northeast has seen an increase in drug-related slayings after the area's alleged drug lord, Osiel Cardenas, was arrested in 2003 in the border city of Matamoros.

Authorities say the violence has intensified in recent months because another reputed drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has been fighting smugglers loyal to Cardenas to gain access to the drug smuggling routes in Nuevo Laredo.

On Thursday, a Nuevo Laredo woman died after a group of assailants shot at her from a car. Another woman was also injured in that case.

You're right. I live about two hours north of Nuevo Laredo. We used to go shopping there quite a bit. We'd get vanilla, leather goods and pottery for a very reasonable price.

But we don't go there anymore.

The town has become really dangerous. Check out this site -- there have been many kidnappings in addition to the killings.

We also used to take our kids there.

But not anymore. The cops are really on edge - especially the border patrol on the Mexican side(!) of the border. These kids are armed with 7.62-sized assault rifles. They also look like they're constantly terrified.

You couldn't drag me into Nuevo Laredo if you tried.

Fine by me just so long as it happened in Mexico. Only problem is, these days what happens in Mexico doesn't stay in Mexico. Their problems always seem to become our problems, the problems of the United States. It's like having a younger brother strung out on drugs and always having *emergencies*

How long before that hole turns into a Somalia complete with drugged out youths driving technicals with .50 machine guns mounted in the beds of rotted out Toyota pick up trucks.

BRITAIN has already had five suspected cases of the killer bird flu, the Government has disclosed.

The revelation comes after warnings that the virus could be contained in poultry feathers imported from China and used to stuff pillows.
