Moldova locks out Russia, Belarus observers from elections

04.03.2005, 14.04

MOSCOW, March 4 (Itar-Tass) - Chisinau authorities have banned observers of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Russia-Belarus union state from attending parliamentary elections in Moldova.

“Our deputation was to fly to Chisinau today in the capacity of international observers, but Moldovan authorities recalled their invitations yesterday,” the chief of the State Duma’s committee on CIS Affairs and Relations with Compatriots, Sergei Antufyev, said on Friday.

Moldova’s parliamentary elections are set for March 6.

Russian and Belarusian observers LOL
Few days ago Moldavians didn’t invited observers from CIS. They said that this organization showed in Ukraine its “objectivity”. That is why Putin send those observers under Russian flag.

This is a big deal, I think. Moldova has been the back-of-beyond for its entire history, even more so since its absorption into the Soviet Union. The fall of the USSR opened the door a crack but they have been a no-where land with no economy whose greatest hope lay in union with Romania, another basket case. Now Romania is forming its alliance with the US, and both are positioning to join the EU.

I am no fan of the EU, for various reasons, but for Moldova this is its chance to step directly out into the 21st century sunshine.

Moldova is the Paraguay of Eastern Europe. A landlocked country that really has no reason to exist.

True, it culturally should be a part of Romania, but Russian influence (and mafia influence) has kept that from happening, and anyway, Romania is poor enough that union with them hasn't been much to aspire to. But with both of them moving toward union with the EU, they may eventually re-unite, which would only make sense.

In 1994, Moldavians had referendum but they decided to be sovereign state. But I think that if they want to join to EU, then with Romania it would be a lot easier. With Voronin in power there is no chance for unification because he claiming that Romania occupied Moldova before WWII.

Yes, the pro-EU ruling communists know who'll support them no matter the results. Fitting.

By the way, here's a little hint: Moldovia is run by the communist party, and unlike Poland where the communists changed their name and won over Solidarity, the one in Moldovia are still called communists. The pro-Russian party is centralist. Of course the EU support them, they see a ideology bond with the rulers of Moldovia.

The real question is which Soviets are you referring to, the former Soviet Union or the European Soviet Union? Anyone familiar with history knows both have had their dark periods, but one is changing for the better, which the other is headed downhill.

You're talking about the EU right? After all, you elected the Soviets back into power in Poland. Go figure.

Being an agent for the Union of European Soviets, Grzegorz 246 would hardly be criticizing them, he was referring to Russia, where his support goes to the ousted Communists, Socialists, Yablak (socialist lite) and Greens.
