You know, I've never been able to understand supposed animal lover's opposition to declawing domestic Cats, at least the front set. To do otherwise is to subject Birds, Rabbits and other Cats to death or injury. Why would someone oppose this practice except on the basis of some unrealistic 'Purist' sentiment.

My dilemma this week was that I caught a young feral kitty in my raccoon trap. I know what damage it is going to wreck on birds and nests and others this spring but didn't have the heart to "off" it

I oppose cutting off fingers at the knuckles, and not just for cats.

I guess its a bit like gun control. I wouldn't disarm my cat, because you know there are strays out there that haven't been declawed, and you want him to be in a fair fight if it comes to that.

(For the record my cat Neelix is the neighborhood stud. He's been fixed, but he still beats the cr*p out of every newcomer cat that dares to tread into our cul-de-sac)

Declawing involves the amputation of the first section of each digit to hopefully prevent the claws from growing back inside the toes ( which can happen!). This results in significant pain and the necessity of walking in an unnatural position for the rest of the cats life. Have you tried to balance and walk with one fourth of your toes missing?

Cats around here suck at getting birds, probably because they have to spend a lot of time keeping an eye out for coyotes...
