Silly question, but why was the Secret Service involved? I mean, I'm all for this worthless piece of sh*t getting caught and, in turn, getting what is coming to him. But couldn't that have been accomplished by the FBI or local authorities?

Seems to be a lot of missing information in the article. You're right. I notice that the first paragraph says he actually broadcast it, but the quote from the undercover agents says he only told them he could broadcast it. It doesn't actually say whether the agents saw the broadcast.
If the guy actually did it, though, my first instinct is simply to make him disappear forever, with no fanfare.
