Painful? Yes - somewhat. Slow? Not really. The liver is a large organ containing lots of blood. He would bleed out real quick
Maybe cut off minor body parts and cauterize the wounds. Give him plenty of amphetamines so he is aware of it all.

Did you read "Hannibal"? I think the idea with the wild pigs would be appropriate.
Hook him up to a blood transfusion, pump him full of amphetamines, and ring the dinner bell.
