West Bend Man Accused Of Pretending To Be Marine Another Veteran Noticed Michael Schuster Wore Medals, Ribbons Wrong
POSTED: 12:07 pm CST March 9, 2005
WEST BEND, Wis. -- A man accused of impersonating a Marine Corps officer is facing federal charges.
Michael Schuster is well known in veterans circles in West Bend.
He's played taps at dozens of veterans' burials, wearing a Marine uniform with military decorations and medals. He was the featured speaker at last year's Memorial Day observance.
The 52-year-old claimed to have served in Vietnam, achieving the rank of major.
But at least one veteran who served as a Marine Corps master gunnery sergeant in Vietnam was suspicious.
Jim Krudwig noticed Schuster wore his medals and ribbons out of place, and he said Schuster saluted like he was in the Air Force.
Federal authorities investigated Schuster's claims and he was charged with wearing military decorations without authorization.
The charge carries a maximum $100,000 fine and a year in federal prison.

"...saluted like he was in the Air Force."
LMAO.
while it was wrong, imitation [or should I say impersonation] is the sincerest form of flattery
If you didn't wear the uniform, you can't talk the talk, walk the walk or act as if you did. Period.
And I didn't wear the uniform.
I'm uncomfortable when I hear civilian people using military language, terminology and salutes. Having not worn the uniform, I feel that I do not deserve to use the language. It drives me crazy when people do.
Sounds like Dan Rather, who claimed to be a "Marine". Rather never made it out of boot camp.
How does the Air Force salute differ from any other branch? Or was he referring the limp-wristed salutes of clinton and kerry?
We usually just waved at each other. ;-)
There's a martini in their hand.
Another wannabe, bites the dust.
"...saluted like he was in the Air Force."
You got it....
Why does anyone do this?
LOL!
The Air Force salute requires you first tuck your golf club under your left arm before saluting with your right.
And I didn't wear the uniform.
I would make this exception . . there are certain types of employment which mimics the military; specifically police work. I was a police officer for years and I have been asked if I was in the military because of my use of language and manner. I was not and I never assert that I was. I do, however, use some of the same terms - terms which have crept into police work because so many police officers are former military service personal. Sorry, can't help it.

Wow. They take that chit seriously! I've known at least a half-dozen of these "PX Heroes" over the years. Most of them were just the harmless WWII Town Drunks that hung out at the local VFW. Since the military has become "enlightened" to the issues of PTSD, and locks everyone up at the VA Hospital, you don't see so much of that these days. But, Wisconsin has always been a trend-setter. ;)
(PX = Post Exchange, for you Civilians.)
Before Al Gore invented the Internet, *SMIRK* you could buy rank & medals and all sorts of fun stuff there; no one ever asked you show your DD214 or orders as proof. Well, rarely. Something about trusting a military member, not questioning their integrity, etc.
A sad situation, but I'm sure this guy (if unarmed) was harmless.
Cold. That's very cold...
I fotgot to ping you to my reply #11.
He must've had a remote control in his hand.
