Yes it means exact that. The law has a good ring to it but the devils in the details.

They didn't deal with the abusive tactics of the credit card companies.

Free will, baby. Free market. They can only charge what the market will pay.

"MBNA would slit FReeper throats for a dollar."

Wrong. MBNA would do no such thing. They'd OUTSOURCE the job to those guys in Iraq who slit throats and behead people far more efficiently and economically than Americans could ever do.

Deuteronomy 15

Debts Canceled Every Seven Years

The Year of Release
(A) 1 "At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts. 2And this is the form of the release: Every creditor who has lent anything to his neighbor shall release it; he shall not require it of his neighbor or his brother, because it is called the LORD's release. 3Of a foreigner you may require it; but you shall give up your claim to what is owed by your brother, 4except when there may be no poor among you; for the LORD will greatly bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you to possess as an inheritance-- 5only if you carefully obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe with care all these commandments which I command you today. 6For the LORD your God will bless you just as He promised you; you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over you.

Losing one's job is something that one must consider when using credit to buy the vacation, or the snowmobile, or the big-screen TV, or anything for that matter.

Or a house? Or a minivan? Or a student loan? And what about the credit card companies having to consider the risks of default when they hand out cards like candy to college kids, jack up the rates after a few late payments, and then bitch and moan when the same cardholder cannot get out of the inflated payments on a 36% card except via bankruptcy. This bill addresses NONE of the predatory practices of credit card companies. It is a one-sided bill, bought and paid for by MBNA et al.

I agree, but along with it they should crack down on agressive marketing by credit card companies.

Gotta love a government that sticks it to the most unfortunate American citizens on paid behalf of a corporate entity (MBNA), and given $350 million to a foreign organization (Palestinian Authority) to form a terrorist state.

This is a total win-win for the credit card companies. If they have to charge off a card, prior to a cardholder going bankrupt, they are compensated for part of their loss by the feds. Not so if a person goes bankrupt. If someone files bankruptcy the bank gets hit with the loss.

I agree - this is bad legislation. The financial institutions need to be held accountable for their lax credit policies. Why is the gov't stepping in to assist these institutions?

No kidding. The media has been donig sob stories.

Frankly, this may hurt some people who genuinely go bankrupt for reasons out of their control.....lots of surgeries etc.

But, it will do a lot more good than harm. And, we can go back and fix any unintended consequences later.

Even a drunkin, broken clock is right twice a day. You will hear many conservatives come out against this over the next day or 2.

You are absolutely correct, proving once again that in spite of the intelligence of the average freeper, many have bought into this MBNA propaganda.

I am really stunned by just how many FReepers have bought into this crap. It is this sort of garbage bill that gives truth to the lie that the GOP is bought and paid for by corporate interests. The Amnesty plan? Bankruptcy "reform"? What about our damned borders? The FBI Director is now "CONCERNED" that TERRORISTS are crossing our borders...yet the Senate in dominated for 2 weeks by a simple payoff to corporate donors.
