The Senate passed legislation Thursday that will make it harder for Americans to rid themselves of debt by filing for bankruptcy.
The House is expected to pass the measure next month, delivering to President Bush a second victory this year on pro-business legislation he had sought.
The vote was 74-25 to approve the most thorough overhaul of bankruptcy laws in a quarter-century.

Good. It shouldn't be easy to walk away from one's obligations.

Hmmm..sounds like our pubs have began to grow a spine! Let's see how far they'll get in the judicial nominees! This filibusters they passed on ANWAR, I hope it sparks a fire under our pubs to get those darn judges confirmed!!

Banks should also be held responsible for handing out depositors and shareholders funds to people with spotty credit.
Tighten up credit requirements and bankruptcies would decline, too.
The collection agancies will celebrate this and so will the banks who assess huge $$$$$$$$$ in late fees and usury interest rates against people who should not have been granted credit in the first place.
Maybe we should open up debtors prisons, too.

What part of corporate law do you not understand? Are you a 3rd grade sleeper? Corporations go bankrupt all the time to restructure. It has nothing to do with limited liability. LLCs also go bankrupt.

I'm no socialist sleeper - but the banks should have to do business with the bankruptcy courts under the same rules they want US to have to obey.
My guess is the banks will get their cake and eat it, too.

Very good news!!! People who walk away from their debts are paid for by higher prices charged to honest people who pay their debts.
In this country, people have responsibility for their actions, it is not the credit card company's fault if people use credit irresponsibly.
