Rather than putting his faith in diplomacy or our legal system, Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson wants to solve an ongoing border dispute with New Mexico by sponsoring a "free-for-all brawl" between senators from the two states.
At issue is more than 600,000 acres in West Texas that New Mexico legislators complain their state lost in a flawed land survey in 1859. The New Mexico Senate voted this week to sue Texas to get the land back. Some lawmakers talked about taking Texas groundwater -- or even the city of El Paso -- as compensation, according to press reports.
But Patterson -- who has already challenged his New Mexico counterpart to settle the dispute in a duel -- had a solution Friday.
"I say to the New Mexico Senate what proud Texians at Gonzales told Santa Anna in 1835: Come and take it," Patterson said in a news release.
"Since both the Texas and New Mexico Senate are currently in session, I propose they meet in the disputed territory to engage in a free-for-all brawl to resolve this issue. Lord knows these boys and girls could use the exercise," he added.
And they say there's no more civility in government.

Wouldn't want to duel with Jerry!
Oh for cryin' out loud!
Hey New Meh-hi-co! Why don't you go an raise some taxes or something? You'll feel better and it will be more productive than a fight with Texas.
DON'T mess with Texas!
BTTT
Why not! It seems perfectly sensable to me.
Somehow I think that the New Mexicans would enjoy the same fate as the Old Mexicans when those worthies decided to, indeed, 'come and take it'. Sometimes it is good to honor your history by demonstrating it to others.
Though I have no idea why they (or anyone) would actually *want* El Paso and the attendant border and security problems....
Hmm, I live not too far west of that area, and this is the first I've heard of it.
And being all too familiar with the Texas / NM border, I can't imagine why EITHER state would want to fight over it... Unless perhaps there is a significant oil and/ or natural gas deposit underneath???
Want to bet we'd have 50,000 angry armed people on the border with NM if they announced they were going to annex it? Texans are funny that way.
Texas, New Mexico Border Ping!
Come Take IT!
Do we really need El Paso?
I don't know, I am sure there are a few tumbleweeds out in west Texas we could part with, but only if Bill Richardson arm wrestles Rick Perry for it...Bush could be the referee!
On a series note, I did hear last night that Condi Rice put her foot down with Mexico and got them to quit diverting the water from the Rio Grande---now Texas will get the water that Mexico has owed us for years and the farmers of Texas have really been hurting...if only Condi would take over the illegal immigrant and border situation from Bush, maybe SHE would be hard-a**ed about it, also!!!
In an objective view, why does the second-largest state in our nation need more land? Perhaps this fella is muckraking an issue for the publicity value at the expense of his constituents real concerns.
New Mexico should just shut up and be thankful Texas won its revolution, otherwise there would be nothing "New" about the state.
Uh huh. MY point entirely.
Range war ping.
I tell you what; the more I hear from Condi, the more I like her.
As to El Paso, whoever wants it can have it, as far as I'm concerned.
Time to move the border to the Rio Grande where it belongs in the first place.
They can keep Santa Fake.
We don't *need* El Paso, but it's the principle of the thing. Letting someone else have a part of Texas at this late date would set a bad precedent and give other people ideas...
