There are two new Windows 98 security updates available. You can find them at this address (direct Link to Microsoft website).
They are quick updates and do not require you to start your computer. If you are using Windows 98, best to get them.
Also, if you are using the old version of Ad Aware by Lavasoft, you should get the second edition. It picks up a whole lot of spyware the first edition does not catch and even updates on first edition will not do it.
I appreciate the tip, I really do, but I have absolutely no clue what any of that means.
Maybe one of my teenagers knows.

Hijack This. USE WITH CAUTION. Don't just select everything and delete. Hijack This removes, amongst other things, BHOs, or Browser Helper Objects. Sometimes this has been the only tool that has effectively removed some things that are persistantly clinging to IE. SOME BHOs you'll want to keep- like the Adobe Acrobat integration with Internet Explorer.
Those are nice ones to leave hanging out there for some hackkiddie to find. Those are the ones you most want to delete. You can still sign on. You just need to reenter you PW and UN.
No, it wasn't Ad Aware SE that I was talking about--it was Lavasoft's No Adware that told me to register after I downloaded it.
I'm with you. I love my Windows 98.
I'm keeping it until my computer burns up.
There's a lot of reasons to stay with Windows 98. It's more secure than XP, for starters, and uses fewer resources.
XP is incompatible with too many programs. It is far cheaper to keep running 98 than to pay several thousands of dollars for the privilege of running on XP, not counting the cost of new computer.
FYI, if you use a product like Webroot's WindowWasher you can specify which cookies to keep & delete the rest - quite handy..
A slight correction - that batch file first line should be:
[[SNIP]]
Oh yeah. Like I said, be careful with that deltree command. LOL
Sort of like telling a bomb disposal technician, "Cut the red wire...
But first disconnect the battery!"
I wonder how many people (including myself) were going to jump all over you with that one?

I've never had that problem with it. Sounds like operator error to me. Win98 is certainly more secure at this point than XP, and it is more stable than ME. I'd actually still be using 95 on this machine if Norton hadn't forced me to upgrade when I put their virus softare on a few years ago.
And if Microsoft won't support my MS software, no problem. OpenOffice runs fine and Firefox is fully compatable (unlike current versions of IE).
Has anyone used this utility? Does it have value? I've visted their webpage and can't seem to find out what it's used for, nor the download link.
From your comment about cookies, I suspect you are running IE. Either Mozilla or Firefox will give you a built in cookie manager. Keep the cookies you want, allow others for the session only, and block the rest.
I have a soft spot in my heart for 98 too, but if you think it's more secure than XP, you must be smoking something.
there are LOTS of reasons, including having a version of very expensive software that will not run on Win2K or later.
I've actually got a 3 way boot set up on my laptop, between Win98SE (only for running that one program), Linux, and WinXP. Actually even though the computer shipped with WinXP Pro (and I just shrunk down the partition with Partition Magic), XP has been the least stable OS on the system. The Win98 has never crashed nor has the Linux. The first time I tried taking the WinXP Tour (I was bored one night), the system blue screened!
One of these days I'm going to need to do a fresh reinstall of XP, but I need to find a weekend that I'm free to reinstall everything.

I installed Win2000 and Office2000 on a Hitachi laptop, Pentium I, 233mHz with 64 RAM. The thing works well, faster than the 98 that was the OEM install. Installed Linksys wireless and the teens have a surf weapon in the family room!
This is the THIRD time I downloaded Spyware Blaster, & everytime I've gotten this Error message when I try to run it:
Cannot find import, DLL may be missing, corrupt, or wrong version. File MSVBV60.DLL, Error 1157
What's the deal???
My PC is the same as yours,,,,it is better than nothing, and my first..I am like the deer in the headlights when I try to follow these discussions...lol
I went to the first link for the two updates, however there were many more than two and I did not do anything as I was nervous about making mistakes.
Me too. I guess I'm a sucker for these threads though. I always come on, then feel like an idiot when they start talking computer stuff. But, here I am again.
I doubt if I'll ever be able to buy another PC again...not until the prices come down quite a lot, so I'm gonna hafta put up w/ what I've got & be happy w/ it.
