Tarantino moves on to non-gratuitous violence

Staff and agencies
Tuesday March 15, 2005

Quentin Tarantino is to exchange the world of yellow jumpsuits and shiny swords for one of muddy khakis and greasy rifles. The Kill Bill director's new film, which has the projected title of Inglorious Bastards, is to be about a platoon of second world war soldiers trapped behind enemy lines.

"I've been kicking back and now I'm getting ready to start working again," Tarantino, who has just started working on the film's script, told the Sun. The director - who was in London picking up an Icon of the Decade award from Empire magazine - also vowed to keep on making movies for at least another 15 years.

"I'm not going to be this old guy that keeps cranking them out," he added. "My plan is to have a theatre by that time in some small town and I will be the manager - this crazy old movie guy.

"I've made enough money that nobody even needs to show up at the theatre. It's just having something to do.

"I will make little speeches before each movie. That sounds like a pretty cool life."

Tarantino added that Shaun of the Dead was his favourite film of 2004, and that his second favourite was The Passion of the Christ.

"I'm actually in the writers' branch of the Academy, but I wanted to switch over to the directors' branch so I could vote for Mel Gibson to win an Oscar," he said. "I think The Passion Of The Christ is one of the most magnificent directing jobs I've seen in my life. I hadn't seen a movie bring back the imagery of silent cinema until that film."

I don't now, is this a compliment to Mel or vindication of those who complained of gratuitous violence? Heh heh heh...

I like reading Tarantino's comments on films better than I like his films, which I find pretty bad.

I adore Quentin Tarantino. He writes better dialogue than anyone else living, his movies make me feel like I've been on a roller-coaster for two solid hours, and he's never afraid to play the jackass parts.

Pulp Fiction and Rez Dogs were very good movies, haven't seen Kill Bill though. QT has a cool vibe in his shows. Not as cool as David Lynch, but cool nonetheless.

I liked 'Dusk till Dawn', 'Reservoir Dogs, and, of course 'Pulp Fiction'.

Not much else really got to me like those other three did.

I think Tarantino is parodying himself these days.

QT's movies are so satisfying because he is making movies with a 70s "grindhouse" flavor. Those moves were kicks in the gut so the make you feel like you were on a rollercoaster ride.

One of my all time favorite scenes from any movie is the diner scene in Reservoir Dogs. I love Steve Buscemi's character's discourse on tipping. I don't agree with it, but it is something one never expects to hear at the end of a meal in a restaurant.

Quinton is a talentless hack who has nothing going for him except that he makes these quirky movies that are just an absolute blast to watch over and over. Kinda like Lou Reed, he can't sing or play guitar all that well but somehow can crank out some ablsolute masterpiece albums. I decided long ago to quit trying to figure it out and just enjoy it while it lasts. You keep making movies Quinton and I'll keep paying to see them.

I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like the anime sequence from Kill Bill Vol. I (I think it's the one with the spaghetti Western song playing in the background).

Bad night for TV, I was thinking of going down to the media room and watching Mulholland Drive.

that are just an absolute blast to watch over and over.

A hack he may be (hacking off of 70s grindhouse movies) but he has talent - anyone who makes a movie that are just an absolute blast to watch over and over is not talentless.

Pulp Fiction is one of my top 5 movies of all time. When the previewed it in NYC, I was of the first into the theatre. His other films are either above average (Reservoir Dogs, True Romance), ho hum (Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Two) or entertaining but forgettable (Kill Bill One).
