As long as some conservatives continue to slam libertarians as amoral, drug addicted anarchists, etc., there isn't much hope for building on the great common ground between the two camps.

As Barnett aptly notes, via the creation of a Libertarian Party, libertarians have prevented themselves from gaining influence in either the Democratic or Republican parties.

Libertarian ideas have plenty of influence outside the LP, just as socialist ideas long were influential outside the Socialist Party and other explicitly socialist groups.

"If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism."

Apparently that comes from a 1975 interview Reagan gave to Reason, a libertarian magazine, when he was getting ready to run for President. It fit his campaign in that year, but may not always be true.

This author has not got the foggiest notion of what libertarianism is. And worse, the author has no idea how destructive her proposals are, for all involved, except possibly the Democratic Party.

Those who are interested in what libertarianism is, should first look the word up in a few dictionaries, to at least know what it means. Then keeping that definition in mind, they should very carefully read the Libertarian Party Statement of Principles (I have it posted on my about page). Then keeping all that in mind, they ought to carefully read the current national Libertarian Party Platform. Then while keeping all that in mind, I would suggest they spend as least a little time reviewing various libertarian position and explanations that can be found at the International Society for Individual Liberty, the Foundation for Economic Education, and the Advocates for Self-Government.
