An effort to defy the White House and back continued subsidies for Amtrak passenger rail service failed in the Senate on Wednesday.

(snip)

The administration says it will subsidize a passenger rail network only if Amtrak is dismantled and its routes and planning are taken over by states and opened to competitive bidding.

Kill AMTRAK and drive a stake through its heart. This has been a foolish allocation of public resources fro 34 years.

I'd hate to see our Adirondack line disappear, but the Porkbarrel Express needs to stop.

Did reuters just admit this or am I losing my mind?

Amtrak, which has never made money in its 34-year history and lost more than $600 million last year, is considered to be an outdated and inefficient system by administration budget and transportation planners.

Wow. A rare moment of honest from Reuters.

Anyway, The Senate actually made good today on at least three issue. ANWR one step closer to actuality. prevented supermajority on previous taxes being made permanent. And denied Amtrak further spending. Reps need to be congratulated.

Won't it be nice to have it run by people that love trains.

See the U.S.A., on a train.

That's another point. Dubya said he wasn't unwilling to provide subsidies -- just not to Amtrak.

We should do the same thing for the airline industry. Screw bailing out these losers. Time for the airlines to provide air traffic controllers and security. If they can't live on the revenues they generate by ticket sales, let them wither on the vine. While we are at it lets get the feds out of the transporation business. Let the states handle their own roads. Let get a refund of federal dollars on the Big Dig.

Don't know. I found out about it while lurking on DU enjoying their misery about the vote on ANWR (which they can't spell, btw.)

I'm curious as to how Arlen voted. (He voted right on ANWR, believe it or not.)

With George W. all the way on this. Wasnt Amtrack supposed to be supporting itself by now instead of draining government coffers of billions?? They had their shot...they blew it. Time for a new approach!
