Hil avoids hard line on the IRA

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Clinton steered clear yesterday of demands by the White House and other Democrats for the immediate disbandment of the Irish Republican Army.

While backing the sisters of a Belfast Catholic allegedly killed by IRA members, Clinton (D-N.Y.) said an IRA stand-down should come as part of a comprehensive settlement on peace in Northern Ireland.

"Sen. Clinton has said that the Good Friday accord should be fully implemented, and that there should be an end to the violence and criminality by all paramilitary groups," Clinton's office said in a carefully worded statement.

Clinton's stance appeared to put her at odds with President Bush and Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), and more in line with Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams' views on implementation of the 1998 Good Friday settlement as a precondition for an IRA fadeout.

In an Op-Ed piece today in the Daily News, Adams, as he has in the past, said, "I believe we can create conditions where the IRA ceases to exist" but declined to give a timetable.

Kennedy and Bush have refused to meet with Adams on his current U.S. visit, but Clinton's spokesman said only that Adams "has not requested a meeting" with the senator.

As First Lady, Clinton and then-President Bill Clinton courted Adams, hosted him at the White House and pressed for his inclusion in the Good Friday accords.

The support of Irish-Americans was crucial to Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate win and also would be vital for her potential 2008 White House run.

Earlier, she joined Kennedy, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) in welcoming the five McCartney sisters and backing their call for justice for their slain brother, Robert McCartney.

Hillary Clinton said the sisters were "sending a clear signal - no other person should be murdered and have the murderers walk free."

The sisters will join Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and Bush at the White House today for St. Patrick's Day.

They clipped an English bank for $50 million a few weeks ago. Maybe she has her eye on some of that.

I have no doubt. When it's a Clinton, follow the money.

Gerry Adams and Hitlery are kindred spirits -- both evil.

She can't take the chance of alienating the terrorist vote now can she?

We really need to ignore this Marxist. Turning to her to get her opinion on every little item that comes up is just giving her free publicity and getting all of us in the habit of turning to her for her opinion.

Eff her opinion.
