Christian Coalition Action Alert President Roberta Combs -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, March 17, 2005
Christian Coalition Urges House Leadership to Pass 'Terri Schiavo' Bill by Unanimous Consent Tonight
President George W. Bush Supports Keeping Terri Schiavo Alive; Will Sign Bill
Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid and Oregon Democrat Senator Ron Wyden Refuse to Allow a Vote on House Bill Passed Last Night to Save Life of Terri Schiavo
Christian Coalition of America urges the House leadership to pass the "Terri Schiavo" private bill sponsored by Senator Mel Martinez and passed by voice vote this afternoon in the United States Senate. Unfortunately, the Senate Democrat Minority Leader, Harry Reid, (D-NV) and Senator Ron Wyden, (D-OR) both refused to allow a vote on the Sensenbrenner/Weldon bill passed by voice vote in the U.S. House last night. Senator Martinez's bill will allow the parents of Terri Schiavo to appeal to a Federal Court to give the federal court an opportunity to ensure that Terri's due process rights had not been violated in the state judicial proceedings. Squabbles amongst House and Senate leaders should not result in the death of Terri Schiavo.
President Bush said he would sign a bill approved by both the House and the Senate. He said in a statement from the White House today regarding Terri Schiavo: "The case of Terri Schiavo raises complex issues. Yet in instances like this one, where there are serious questions and substantial doubts, our society, our laws, and our courts should have a presumption in favor of life. Those who live at the mercy of others deserve our special care and concern. It should be our goal as a nation to build a culture of life, where all Americans are valued, welcomed, and protected and that culture of life must extend to individuals with disabilities."
Time is of the essence. Florida judge, George Greer, has allowed Terri Schiavo's husband, Michael Schiavo, to withdraw Terri's feeding tubes tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST. This act will cause Terri Schiavo to suffer an extremely painful death over a 2-week period.
Here are the Action Items that need to be accomplished immediately:
1. Christian Coalition activists need to call Speaker Dennis Hastert (202-225-0600) and Majority Leader Tom DeLay (202-225-4000) to urge them to pass the Martinez bill by unanimous consent tonight in order to save Terri Schiavo's life.
2. Call your Member of the House and urge them to contact their House leadership to pass the "Terri Schiavo" private bill sponsored by Senator Martinez by unanimous consent TONIGHT. (202-225-3121).
Please keep the above issue in your prayers. Through prayer great and mighty things can be accomplished.
I just e-mailed Speaker Hastert.
Our government disgusts me...
Our boys are dying in Iraq so we can kill defenseless women in hospitals here by starving them?
Shame
Is anyone there besides the operator tonight? I have been calling C. Ortiz all evening and can't get an answer.
The word needs to be out there. If you are disabled, Democrats want you dead.Pretty sad state of affairs.
Terri ping! If anyone would like to be added to or removed from my Terri ping list, please let me know by FReepmail!
Prayers offered up!
Tried to leave a message....will attempt a fax tonight, and phone call AM Fri. Thanks.
The blame lies entirely on the House, most especially Tom Delay. They knew the Senate would only approve a specific bill pertaining to Terry, but they (the House) decided to pass a bill regarding all cases such as these. Then they adjourned for their holiday. This is unforgivable.
The issue here is Terry and Terry alone. For the time being. Tom DeLay knew this but still acted in the manner in which he did.
Words cannot express my level of contempt for Mr. DeLay and I hope he goes down in flames in 2006.
I just got another update.....the U.S. House adjourned tonight and will be back Monday....before taking their 2 week break.
I don't know how they can sleep over the weekend if Terri's starvation begins. How could they even adjourn in good conscience?
I know we'll all make the necessary calls as mentioned in the alert and also continue praying hard. Jam their switchboards!!
And I'll add.....increase pressure on the President by making calls to that level as well. He can use an executive order! Don't let anyone tell you he can't....there is a lot of flexibility there.
My friends, our "leadership" in the House is corrupt. We have the porker Hastert and his corrupt buddy DeLay-- and they care not about conservative ideas and policies but the rank and pomp of their offices. I wonder how much food they will eat this weekend? How much water? How dare they adjourne the house, how dare they pass a bill they knew would be differet than the Senate's?
Porkers Haster and DeLay must be punished for their acts. Because of them, Terri will be starved to death.
What is this Harry Reid Crap? Is this POS using Terri as just another Obstruction to the Republicans?
Does this mean the senate vote is delayed because of this
A-Hole? Is this guy Just friggin NUTS? Will "They" EVER Get "it"?
I Don't understand this? Someone explain.
Terri ping!
Sorry Seaside, You answered before I asked.
It's a pro forma House session on Monday--my guess is that all but a few House members are back in their districts by now.
No, the fault lies in our "beloved" "conservative" House Leadership.
They passed a bill they knew would not be approved by the Senate. The Senate passed a bill that would save Terri. The two bills were different but there is no way for the House to vote on the Senate's bill because the House adjourned for the Easter break.
Just swell. I can imagine that both Hastert and DeLay will raise money this weekend at buffet dinners, appealing to social conservatives, all the while stuffing their faces.
This is straight out of Animal Farm, I see no difference in the Republicans and Democrats.
I thought I heard Rick Santorum on CSPAN say both the House and the Senate would be back THIS MONDAY!
Catspaw, I don't see anything about that here - so we ought to continue calling and doing what we can. And if we find the House has wimped out, go on up to Pres. Bush.
