I think, that in the end, Taiwan will reunite with mainland China. But it will be a long time from now when generations have forgotten the past.
I think that the beginning of a reunification will happen at the FINANCIAL and TRADE levels first. China might start making offers to Taiwan that it simply can't refuse. I envision MONEY being a factor in bribing the Taiwanese to buy lots of cheap land and get unlimited cheaper labor. I can see the Taiwanese government being BOUGHT...and them selling the idea of reunification to the people.

Promises of freedom and independence can always be made by anyone. Hong Kong hasn't fallen under the sickle yet....but it hasn't been long, has it?
