PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - As a deal in Congress was worked out to have federal courts decide Terri Schiavo's fate, emotions swelled outside the brain-damaged woman's hospice room Saturday, with protesters arrested after they symbolically tried to smuggle in bread and water on her second day without a feeding tube.
As supporters maintained a vigil outside the hospice, Schiavo's mother pleaded for the 41-year-old woman's life.
"We laugh together, we cry together, we smile together, we talk together," Mary Schindler told reporters. "Please, please, please save my little girl."
Congressional leaders announced a compromise between Senate and House Republicans that would allow the brain-damaged woman's case to be reviewed by federal courts that could restore her feeding tube.
The Senate convened briefly Saturday evening to give formal permission for the House to meet Sunday, when it otherwise would be adjourned for the Easter recess.

"This past Christmas Eve day, 2004, I went to visit Terri Schiavo with her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, her sister, her niece, and Attorney David Gibbs III. The visit took place at the Woodside Hospice for about 45 minutes just before noon..."

...She then returned to interacting with her mother. When her mother was close to her, Terris whole face lit up. She smiled. She looked directly at her mother and she made all sorts of happy sounds. When her mother talked to her, Terri was quiet and obviously listening. When she stopped, Terri started vocalizing. The vocalizations seemed to be a pattern, not merely random or reflexive at all. There is definitely a pattern of Terri having a conversation with her mother as best she can manage...

I think this is good news! It's just been so up and down lately that I'm afraid to feel joy! I hope something positive will finally be done.
How quaint. They print these very words alongside a picture of her smiling at her mother. We call that what?...all together now....cognitive.
Michael stopped Terri's rehabilitation for which money had been awarded. What a monster.
The Left likes monsters. Can't get enough of 'em, in fact.
There are people who have enough pride to kill someone rather than admit being wrong. Greer is such an individual, and he happens to be a judge.
A private law to help correct a singular injustice of this magnitude is probably the best approach. General laws to prevent this type of injustice in the future for others can be written under circumstances which allow more time for thoughtful consideration.
What I don't know and can't seem to find is information on how being without water for up to 3 days might affect Terri.
I know she once went for almost went for 2 days once before, but seem to recall 3 days starts to detrimentally harm the body.
Id hope they resolve this by tomorrow !

Those arguing states rights and other legal bs as justification for starving this woman to death are cold, callous individuals who have no compassion for their fellow man / woman. Frankly, it really frightens me how many there are - right here on FR even. It is this utter lack of feeling for others that lead to things like the holocaust. That happened not too long ago, so I guess it is still within our capacity to be incredibly evil. They are surfacing only because they feel emboldened for some reason. Maybe they are just making a death rattle. They need to be smacked back down again and it needs to be known that their lack of respect for human life will not be tolerated.
Does anyone know if the Republicans had to pay a ransom to the democrats to cooperate on this bill ? Where concessions made on certain bills ?
What perturbs me no end is how many statutes have been broken, rather than upheld by this judge.
I think it was more like 7 days. Not sure. I don't know how it will affect her body. I'm pretty sure she can hang on until Monday.
Yeah, they promised them they wouldn't portray them as the murderers that they are.
I respect the Constitution, but it was written to uphold the sentiments in the Declaration of Independence. You cannot have one without the other. One is Spirit, one is law. Separate the two and you become a) bleeding heart without a centered foundation or b) heartless.
Is it any wonder the extremes of the left and right fit one of these two descriptions?
Besides, apparently this whole argument (while revealing) has no application to the circumstances since Congress and the House in effect passed a private relief bill that has been issued in past.
I've never seen this picture before.
This picture should be on the start of every Terri thread.
It doesn't indicate a comatose patient, at all. People reading type about this case, are conjuring up a completely different image of this woman, IMO.
"The case has encompassed at least 19 judges in at least six different courts"
So, let's throw a couple more at it ... I mean after buying off all of them, and the doctors and the armed guards, the nurses and just about everyone else in Florida, he's got to be running out of money, right ? ...
I saw a bit of a live news conference with Martinez, Santorum, and the commie loving Sen Harkin. I wonder if he supports this bill. It sure would be a good sign if they have bipartisan support. If Harkin is going along with it, I hope it's a good bill.
I suppose Boxer or one of the abortion lovers can try to halt this on Monday. I wouldnt put it past them.
Isn't that the truth !!!! But this is good NEWS !!!!
How quaint. They print these very words alongside a picture of her smiling at her mother. We call that what?...all together now....cognitive.
Relative to Terri, yes. Relative to the physicians, it is called cognitive dissonance, and that really is the fundamental problem.
Even though science has yet to prove that the cerebral cortex is the causal determinant of consciousness, virtually every physician that agrees with the prognosis that Terri is PVS, does so based soley on the medical records, and not from direct observation of Theresa's behavior.
It's no wonder that when, or if, they do observe Terri directly, they would in fact not see any behavior indicative of consciousness since this would constitute a dissonant observation that would conflict with what they already hold to be true.
