WASHINGTON -- The nation's undocumented immigrant population surged to 10.3 million last year, spurred largely since 2000 by the arrivals of unauthorized Mexicans in the United States, a report being released Monday says.
The population of undocumented residents in the United States increased by about 23 percent from 8.4 million in the four-year period ending last March, according to the analysis of government data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a private research group.

That equates to a net increase of roughly 485,000 per year between 2000 and 2004. The estimate was derived by subtracting the number of unauthorized immigrants who leave the United States, die or acquire legal status from the number of new undocumented immigrants that arrive each year.
The prospect of better job opportunities in the United States than in their native countries remains a powerful lure for many immigrants, said Pew center director Roberto Suro, pointing to a reason often cited by other researchers.
"The border has been the focus of federal efforts (to cut illegal entry) and has not produced a reduction in flow. Certainly that's an indication of ongoing demand," he said.
The population is growing at a similar pace as in the late 1990s even though the U.S. economy today isn't as robust, Suro said.
Assuming the flow of undocumented immigrants into the country hasn't abated since March 2004, the population is likely near 11 million now.
The report considered "undocumented" immigrants primarily as those here illegally; those in the United States on expired visas; or those who violated the terms of their admission in other ways.

The last thing we need is to waste military assets rounding up illegals. Our military is already stretched to the breaking point. The use of National Guard and Reserves at current rates is proof of that.
If you want to round up illegals hire more INS agents or authorize the police to round them up.
Arizona Proposed Prison Bill 'insults' Mexico's Sovereignty
MEXICO CITY - Mexico has rejected a proposal by some Arizona lawmakers to move undocumented inmates to a privately run prison south of the border, calling it an "insult" to Mexico's sovereignty.
Arizonans pay $80 million to $100 million a year to house the 4,000 Mexican Illegal Aliens (which Mexico calls “migrants”) in Arizona state prisons.
The measure is simply aimed at saving money for the Arizona taxpayer.
The governor of Arizona will do nothing to stem the flow of illegal aliens saying it is a federal matter. McCain and Congressman Kolbe are of little help. This invasion is about 90% drugs, the other 10% are laborers both legal and illegal spread out all over the country. The drug war is heating up and could bring both America and Mexico down; these are NOT nice people and they threaten all citizens. We have a Terrorist problem and a Drug War problem – both are becoming indistinguishable.
Two thirds to half right. Nobody really knows. That's a sad commentary.

No I don't. Pueblo is over 80% Hispanic with many of those illegals and criminals from Mexico. You must not get down to Wal-Mart much from Rye.

Lincoln Restaurant. They are calling for a candlelight vigil against
"hate" because we are meeting to discuss illegal immigration.
Since they are planning to be there at 6:30, a half hour before our
meeting
starts, I wish to ask you all not to engage any of these people in
discussion, and not to do anything other than walk past and ignore
these
people. I have spoken to the restaurant manager, Tony, he said we are
meeting in a private room, it is a private meeting, and if they start
any
trouble he will call the police.
Often these groups are successful in getting meetings stopped because
the
restaurant owners are afraid of trouble. It is a very effective way to
stifle freedom of speech. I am sure the media will be there and I
prefer
that you don't speak to them, we already know what side they are on.
Please do not be afraid to come to the meeting, in fact, please bring a
friend or someone you know who is also interested in the issue of
illegal
immigration.

I stand corrected on the percentage. I got that through the Pueblo Chieftain (which is more often wrong than right). City of Pueblo statistics show a roughly 50% number on Hispanics. But, this still seems low. I do know that it is tough to visit the park down the street because of the Hispanic gang activity and that English is a 2nd language now just about everywhere I go.
Allston and Framingham have become Brazil North!
They're not going peacefully or otherwise. Yesterday our Ohio Sunday paper had a front page story about our city's illegals, and how hard it is for them living in fear that the father might be sent back to Mexico. What a hoot! Then the wife spoke, she said "We're not going back. We are staying right here and raising our children here."
Meanwhile our Catholic Churches in the city are adding thousands of illegals to their churches and schools. However, most get county funds like free housing - we have two high rises for Mexicans here, and a few other poor. Also the hospital gives them free birthing classes, expensive car seats, and from the Government (Ha) which is us, they get free milk and food, and their other health needs are cared for at the Free Clinic here. (Free for illegals not residents)
Meanwhile, our city's elderly are paying higher and higher taxes to the city to help pay the bills, while their own health care is cut. Yeah, "they are doing the jobs here that Americans won't do." Bull Krap. They are here to suck the system dry, and George Bush will give them every chance to do that.

Sure, then when their kid gets sick they take him to the ER which has to accept him. Eventually hospitals become overburdened and close up. I live in LA, its happening here already. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

As Americans we need to educate ourselves and start finding new ways to make money
What crap. More people are more educated than ever before in this country. It would be hard to imagine much more. It won't matter if intellectual property is copied, stolen, carried away or whatever, it'll just be gone.
I don't but it the number is too low. 4 million estimated illegal aliens enter this country annually, yet there is only 10 million here? Try somewhere like at least 26 million given the idea that some may return home. Half of them are living in the State of California.
When Californians cannot find an open hospital inside California due to the illegals who show up at hospitals and get treated even though the doctors and nurses know they will not get a dime ever, maybe then they will realize they need to close the border. Chances are, they're will be a mass exodus of the working class from California, leaving it over run with illegal Mexicans who do not support the state through taxes or anything economical and the property values will plummet to fractions of their current values causes a total economic collapse. My guess is 10-15 years tops.
