The dispute with Terri's parents began in February, 1993 over money, specifically the $300,000 loss of consortium award that was given to Michael. The Schindlers and Michael have not spoken directly to each other since then.

The dispute over money was due to the Schindlers saying, "Okay, you've got the money now, so get her into rehab" and Michael saying, "No." The dispute over money was because Michael was refusing to treat her despite having just been awarded the $$ to do so.

There are differing explanations of what the money dispute was all about. The only thing we know for certain is

On February 14, 1993, this amicable relationship between the parties was severed. While the testimony differs on what may or may not have been promised to whom and by whom, it is clear to this court that the severance was predicated upon money and the fact that Mr. Schiavo was unwilling to equally divide his loss of consortium award with Mr. and Mrs. Schindler.
