Cold warrior Richard Perle - dubbed the "Prince of Darkness" during the Reagan years - is feeling heat from the SEC.

Hollinger International director and former Pentagon bigwig Richard Perle might face civil charges for his involvement in the alleged looting of the company by ousted newspaper baron Conrad Black.

The SEC has warned Perle — that it is considering filing suit against him...........

Perle confirmed he had received a so-called Wells notice — a formal warning that SEC staffers are prepared to bring charges.............

If the SEC decides to take action, regulators could seek an order barring Perle from serving on the boards of public companies.

For the former Assistant Secretary of Defense under the late President Reagan, it would be the latest of several setbacks on both the political and business fronts.

"It's a huge stigma," said Robert Zito......."Anyone under an SEC investigation will be deemed a pariah."

Perle was blasted in an internal investigation by Hollinger that contends he enabled Black and his business associates to plunder the company to the tune of $400 million. Perle has maintained that Black duped him.

The report, written by former SEC Chairman Richard Breeden, accused Perle of approving some questionable transactions while at the same time being heavily compensated by the company.

The Breeden report said Perle received some $3 million in 2000 and 2001 through an incentive plan, leaving him beholden to Black ................"

...........Perle has resigned from his post as chairman of the influential Defense Policy Board amid calls from Congress for an investigation into his business dealings.

The move followed press reports of possible conflicts of interests related to his dual role on the policy board and as a partner for Trireme, a company that invests in homeland security and defense-related industries.

Duped? Yeah, sure. All those years at the Pentagon might dull one's brain so as to make an individual oblivious to conflicts of interest (/sarc).

$400 million???

Is THAT all????

Sheeeesh, that's chump change compared to the $1.5 Trillion that the neocons have plundered from the U.S. Treasury since Dubya took office.
