"Those close friends have been telling newspapers that Terri never excelled in school. She sometimes talked about becoming a veterinarian, but got barely passing grades while in Catholic school. Her interests during school years are unclear, though she shied away from boys and parties."

What purpose does this paragraph serve. My hunch is that CBS wants to diminish her life. It shows absolutely no respect or reverence by CBS.

"What purpose does this paragraph serve?"

Maybe just to point out to the sheeple that her life was headed in the direction of prudish, right-wing, religious fanatic and really her death is nothing to fret about.
Just a wild guess.

I agree. This nasty paragraph was more than unfortunate, it was deliberately inserted to lend credence to the notion that Terri's life wasn't worth talking about even when she was healthy. CBS has an agenda here.

Quite precisely presented:
They want to diminish her life by stating: She never excelled in school.
Obviously there lives that are more or less valuable in CBS's judgment.

The triage system of euthanasia depends on a determination of the value of the life to be ended, in other words, a worthless life is not worth prolonging.

The repurcussions for organ harvesting are stunning. I've been meaning to have the orgain donor designation removed from my driver's license for some time, and now I'm really going to do it. I can just imagine officials in some hospital deciding that some young person's (or celebrity's) life is more valuable than that of a menopausal homemaker.
