Thanks! I too participated in the spelling bee when I was younger, only for me it was 30 YEARS ago! ;-) OK, so I'm old. I tried for three years in a row and never got to the state level, but it sure was fun trying.

The nationals are composed of students that win contests sponsored by newspapers, so in some cases a state like Colorado will only send two contestants (the statewide Rocky Mountain News winner and the winner of Boulder county's Daily Camera News contest), while other states may send 4 or 5 contestants (like Texas and California). There will will around 275 contestants at the national's.

Oftentimes, the county level contests for nationals are a little easier since they don't have as many spellers working their way through the various levels. For example, the Boulder county speller won on: 'readjourn'.

Congrats!

Four out of the top six were home-schooled.

There. Much better (and more accurate) than the newspaper reporter saying four out of the top nine were home schooled.

Congrats to Josiah, who beat me in 05, and to Kayla, who beat me in 06

Congratulations to you and welcome to F.R.

Here's a helpful hint for you, if you want to get along with the folks here, do not join the F.R. spelling or grammar police force.

I may sometime in the future spell grammar as "grammer".

Spelling bees often use words not very helpful in normal conversation, but stupefacient is Al Gore.

I think grammer is masculine and grammar is feminine.

I think it's latin, I studied latina in high school for 4 years.

She didn't even know I existed though.
