FERGUSON MEETS WITH VOTERS, SLAMS PLUM TOLL HIKE

Reston and Herndon-area residents congregated last night at Langston Hughes Middle School to voice their opposition to the Dulles toll hike in a meeting organized by NoTollIncrease.com.

Donny Ferguson, a Reston Libertarian, spoke with voters about his opposition to the Dulles toll hike backed by incumbent Del. Ken Plum (D-36th,) his support for the a Dulles freeway project and proven solutions to traffic congestion.

"After a quarter-century of demanding endless toll hikes while watching traffic just get worse, Ken Plum still doesn't get it," said Ferguson. "Anytime you can reduce traffic congestion by 50 percent in just 18 months, and at one-eighth the cost of rail, you owe it to taxpayers to get traffic moving."

The meeting was productive, with Ferguson recruiting new volunteers and supporters.

"I was struck by the sheer number and wide array of citizens outraged over Plum's toll hike. There was an even mix of Democrats, Republicans and independents, all of whom were very angry at Plum, very excited about my campaign and want to get involved," said Ferguson. NoTollIncrease.com is non-partisan and does not endorse or support candidates.

Plum, who lives just yards from the school, did not attend the meeting or meet with constituents.

The proposed freeway plan calls for the Dulles Toll Road and a portion of I-66 to add a lane in both directions. All toll booths would be removed in three years, and commuters could choose between the free lanes and two Express Toll Lanes. The project would drastically cut traffic congestion in the region, which rail backers admit is not possible with Metro.

Reports show the plan would reduce traffic congestion in the Dulles corridor by 50 percent. The Dulles Corridor Rail Association, which Plum chairs, released an environmental impact statement estimating a zero percent reduction in congestion with rail

I was wondering what was the next big story that would bump Schiavo off the front pages.
