"There was no field we studied in which there were more conservatives than liberals or more Republicans than Democrats.

Odd. I remember reading on engineering.com about a poll done how how engineers voted in '04: 55% Bush vs. 33% Kerry. I was holding out hope that that engineering, math, and physical science professors were rational and logical.

I remember Carl Sagan, an exceptional scientist - he passed away some time ago - and he was just as full-blown liberal as he was smart.

It seems odd, but I suppose it depends less on one's intelligence than his understanding of and ability to deal with the real world. But it's hard to understand why someone intellectually endowed would hate America and want to destroy her.
